Chapter Twenty-Two

I sat on his front doorstep for that old lady for hours, just crying and constantly repeating "He's gone, he's really gone."

"Darling, I'm sure your parents are worried sick about you. It's 6:00." she whispers gently.

"6:00," I sniffle.

"Yes, darling."

"Oh no, I'm late!" I shoot up. Turning to her I give her a hug, "Thank you."

"Of course, I'm so sorry you had to find out this way," she gives me a solemn smile.

I nod, jump into my car and speed away, not once looking back.

"Where have you been," my mother whisper scolds me.

"I went to see an old friend, only to find out they had died," I whisper.

She gives me a long stare before returning to her guests. These were all her friends, none of mine. So why is my appearance so important here?

Sighing, I walk down the stairs and into the foyer.

"Ahh, there's my beautiful girlfriend," a voice booms from my right.

Turning my head, I come face to face with Harrison. "Hey," I smile shyly. He leans in and kisses my forehead, like he used to do.

"Let's go upstairs, to the balcony, I have a surprise for you," he whispers seductively in my ear.

"Okay," I follow him up the stairs and to the balcony. But what I fail to notice is the Strange Man tailing us.

We walk out onto the balcony, a fresh spring breeze blowing in the air. I shiver, I'm still only in my summer dress.

"Are you cold?" He asks, moving closer to me.

"Yes, kinda."

He smiles and goes to put his arm around me. But the next thing I know, I'm being tossed over the edge.

"Harrison!" I scream, fear and adrenaline coursing through my veins.

"Hmm," he looks down at me wickedly.

"Why'd you do that," I cry out.

"I know what you are. You have no reason to be here. In the human world. You're different, and my family is known for exterminating the abnormal people. You were different though, I never realized you were abnormal until you started having those nightmares. Then you went on that little quest of yours and I knew then that I was right. You're not like us. You and your petty boyfriend need to be exterminated."

"No, please Harrison. I thought you loved me," tears are streaming down my face. I'm losing my grip.

"I did, until I found out of course what you really are," he sneers.

I brace myself as he slowly pushes each finger of mine off the edge. Just as I close my eyes, waiting for the impact of the fall, I hear a scream. "What the-".

I open my eyes soon enough to watch Harrison being thrown from the balcony, he hits the ground. His lifeless body doesn't move. I look up, expecting Mac to be there, rescuing me, like he always did.

Instead it was the Strange Man. He grabs my arms and pulls my shaking body back up onto the balcony. I grab ahold of him and cry. He just sits there and holds me till I stop.

Once I stop, he looks at me. "You and Mac saved the president, you did a great job." His voice is soft.

I just nod my head, not knowing what to say.

"He wants to know if there's anything he can do to repay you?"

An idea forms in my head.

"Take this away. This so called super power, and make me forget all of this."

He looks at me surprised. "Are you sure, miss?"

I look him dead in the eye, "Yes, I'm sure. I want to forget."
