The sky above the sea was tenebrous but the S.S. Venture was lit with many lanterns casting a cheery glow over the deck. Some of the sailors began to play a lively tune and Jimmy grabbed Silya's hand, spinning her into his arms.
Everyone clapped along to the music as he swung her around in a playful jig. Finally they collapsed upon the floor laughing breathlessly.
She clutched her side and struggled into a sitting position taking Jimmy's proffered hand, allowing him to pull her to her feet. Slowly the party broke up as everyone headed either to bed or to their posts.
"I finished South Moon Under" Jimmy suddenly stated "I really liked it thank you for letting me read it"
"I have Drums Along The Mohawk if you would like to borrow it"
He nodded excitedly "I'll walk you to your cabin"
As they walked through the narrow passage they passed Bruce Baxter's cabin, the door was slightly ajar allowing them to see the posters that lined the walls.
Jimmy bumped Silya's shoulder and held up two markers a wicked grin spread across his face and she met it with an evil smirk. She plucked a marker from his hand and carefully stepped into Baxter's room.
She scoffed as she read the title of the poster in front of her, Dame Tamer. She carefully drew on a handlebar mustache and a monocle before moving to the next poster. The sound of footsteps on the wooden floor warned them of his approach and they exited the room just before Baxter got to the door.
They ran down the corridor giggling like children. They ducked inside Silya's cabin and froze when Ann turned and looked at them suspiciously. Silya grabbed The Drums Along The Mohawk off her bed and handed it to Jimmy.
"Goodnight!" She called after him as he retreated from Ann's judgemental stare.
"You seem to spend a lot of time with Jimmy" Ann said "He is an orphan working at sea, he can't take care of you"
Silya's cheeks burned "He makes me happy" she said softly as she slipped under the covers and turned towards the wall, effectively cutting off the conversation much to Ann's chagrin.
The sea was turbulent and the strong wind threatened the sailors with it's frigid breath. A thick fog rose in front of Silya's mouth as she struggled across the deck following Jimmy towards the hold.
She stumbled as the deck lurched violently under them and Jimmy grabbed her hand pulling her against his side, they climbed down the steps into the hold where he had originally found her. They sat with their backs against a pile of ropes, Silya shivered her soaking wet clothing sticking to her skin, Jimmy wrapped his arm around her pulling her into his side.
She relaxed into him allowing his body heat to warm her. Her heart was pounding in her ears and she hoped that he couldn't hear it.
"Silya" He whispered his hot breath on her neck coaxing her to turn her face towards him. Her breath caught in her throat as she stared into his blue eyes only inches from her own, he leaned closer and she responded in turn closing her eyes just as their lips were about to touch...
"Jimmy! Get up here!" Hayes strong voice echoed through the silence and they jerked apart eyes wide and hearts racing. Jimmy sprang to his feet and fled up the stairs to the deck where Hayes awaited him.
She pressed a hand against her chest willing her heart to be calm. She sat there in the hold, gently running her fingers over the expertly carved lion that she always carried in her pocket.
"Rocks ahead!" Jimmy's panicked voice was muffled by the storm, Silya shot to her feet just as the ship pitched to the left sending her hard against the stairs, she latched onto them, hot liquid dripping down the side of her head.
A darkness settled over her and she slipped to the floor unaware of the yelling of the sailors or the absence of her sister.
