  May 2, 1998
Draco was at a complete and utter loss of words. His brain could not possibly process what was going on. The cold, wet stone brick ground of the Hogwarts entrance was ripping his expensive pants as he kneeled there on the ground, cowering over her body. His hand hovered over her cold, dead one. He was afraid to touch it. He was afraid that if he touched her, it all became real, that he would be accepting it. If he held her hand, he would be accepting that the love of his life, Hermione Granger, was gone.
He couldn't bring himself to do anything but sit there and stare until he heard a voice.
"Draco?" Someone said from behind him. He wanted to turn to see who it was but he could not tear his eyes away from her body, her glassy and frozen eyes.
"Draco we must get her out of here if we want the body to be protected." The whimsical voice said. Draco could not look away.
The person came forward and knelt next to Draco, it was Luna. She put her hands together as if she were saying a prayer and closed her eyes. She muttered a few words that Draco didn't have the energy or care to make out.
Then Luna reached forward and attempted to shut Hermione's glossy eyes. Draco grabbed her arm stiffly.
  "Don't touch her." He whispered.
"I just wanted to-" Luna reached forward again.
"I SAID DON'T TOUCH HER." Draco screeched. He sounded like a mandrake with his voice cracking wildly.
"I'm sorry." Luna apologized and set her hand on his shoulder. He knew she didn't mean for attempting to touch Hermione's dead body. No, she meant she was sorry for his loss. She was sorry because she knew Draco had just lost the one thing that was right in his life. The one thing keeping him sane.
This was when it started to settle in.
Draco broke down in tears. They were hot and salty and dripped down his face and onto his dirt covered hands.
His breaths were heavy and shaky, they caused his whole body to shudder as he sobbed. Luna stretched her arm around his shoulders and pulled him into a hug.
"I'm so sorry Draco." She whispered as tears ran silently down her cheeks as well.
He cried for what seemed like hours until all the water in his body was gone. Now he sat there silently again staring at Hermione.
"I'll be back Draco. I'm going to report the news to the others." Luna said and left.
He finally let himself touch Hermione's hand. When he did, he grasped it hard. It was cold and unfamiliar to his touch.
  "I love you." Draco said.
  "I really do." He continued.
"I love you so much, I don't think I told you that enough and... and now it's too late." Draco said in between sobs. He knew technically she couldn't hear him, but somewhere out there he thought just maybe she was listening and could hear what he was saying.
"You were the light of my life Hermione and... and now I'm just sitting here in the darkness because you're gone." Draco sobbed harder.
"You're gone and I don't know what to do about it." Draco sobbed at full force and collapsed himself on top of Hermione's cold body. He knew he would never be the same.
