"Um..."

"Earth to Kurt," Sebastian said, pulling him out of his thoughts.

He shook his head, following Sebastian back. "Yeah, right, sorry, spaced out. So, what's going on?"

"Freshman, definitely doesn't look too good. Someone tried to ask what happened to him, long story short he's having a panic attack and we don't know if we should contact his family or child protective services. You're good at calming people down, and I'm, um..."

"Intimidating?" Kurt suggested.

"Something like that." He frowned. "I'm sorry I always bother you with these things."

"Bas, you're not bothering me," Kurt reassured him. "I like to help. You don't need to apologize."

"Sorry."

"Oh, Kurt, thank goodness," Wes said as he and Sebastian walked up. He was sitting on the ground beside a boy whose hair was dyed a dark red- it matched his black eye.

He was hugging his knees to his chest. "Please leave me alone," he said quietly.

"You heard him," Kurt said. "Shoo. Both of you, shoo."

They left and Kurt sat beside the boy, keeping a respectful distance. "I'm Kurt."

The boy mumbled something.

"What was that?"

"Madi," he said, only slightly louder. His voice was unsteady. "Well, Maddox, but I prefer Madi."

"It's nice to meet you, Madi. Can you tell me five things you can see?"

"That doesn't work for me," he said bluntly.

"You're sure?"

"I've had my fair share of panic attacks and none of those tricks work."

"You think you could do it for me anyway?"

"It won't work."

"Please?"

He huffed, looking up. "You, a wall, a door, a light, and a painting. Happy?"

Kurt smiled. "You're so irritated with me that you're not shaking anymore."

"I-" Madi stopped, surprised. "You're right. That was fast. So your goal was literally to piss me off?"

"Guilty as charged. Do you know what triggered your panic attack?"

"It..." He sighed. "They asked me how I got a black eye. I already had so much built up anxiety about them asking that it just... Boom."

He nodded. "That happened to me once. I had a black eye and several other bruises, and it wasn't the first time. My friends finally asked how I always got so injured. Worst panic attack of my life. I fainted, actually."

"What happened?" Madi asked curiously.

"I told them. There was this guy at my old school that gave me hell for being gay, the teachers turned a blind eye to it. Then I transferred here and everything got so much better."

"That's awful. A lot of people assume I'm gay or trans or whatever because of the hair and that I go by Madi."

"Are you?"

He shrugged. "I know I'm definitely a guy, but I'm not sure about the whole sexuality thing. I feel like it'd take a lot for me to get on that level with someone, I don't know how people just walk up to other people and ask them out. I've never actually dated anyone before."

"Yeah, I can understand that. It's probably stupid to ask out someone you just met, but hey, life would be boring if we didn't make questionable choices."

Madi laughed. "That's true." Then he paused. "I suppose you want to know how I got the black eye."

"If you want to tell me, I'll listen, but I'm not going to force you to say anything."

They were both quiet for a minute, Kurt knowing Madi was deciding what to say.

"It's from my uncle. I saw him for the first time in forever and he was furious when he found out my hair was dyed. Apparently he's homophobic, too. But my parents called the police on him and forced him off of me and made sure none of us will ever see him again. My mom sent word to the rest of our family about what happened. So I'm perfectly fine, I'm just worried that my parents will get in trouble when they're the good guys."

Kurt nodded. "I'll tell them that you're fine, they'll leave you alone. They don't have to know what happened, just that I know and that it's already been handled."

He looked grateful. "Thank you, thank you so much."

"Of course. Do you need some help getting to your dorm?"

"I... Well, I know how to get there, but I don't really want to walk through the school alone, not after what just happened and with this black eye.."

"Well." Kurt stood, helping the boy up. "Let's walk together, then."

As they left the room, Kurt shot a he's fine look to Sebastian and Wes. Sebastian nodded slightly.

"You think he's actually okay?" Wes asked as Kurt and Madi disappeared from sight.

"Yeah. I trust Kurt," Sebastian said. "Whether he was okay or not before he definitely is now."

"True."

A text came in on Wes's phone and he checked it.

Thad
I just saw the Dean
heading back to his
office

He bit his lip, glancing towards the dining hall where he knew David was.

Weren't we going to
see him this evening?

Because we thought
that would be the only
time he was free. I
mean, we can still
wait until the evening,
but right now we know
he's free

Guess who typed this with only their left hand because their right hand is broken (not literally... I hope) from writing and using it too much???

THIS GUY!

heheh... I'm in pain

Any-who, do they:
A) Go to the Dean in the evening
B) Go to the Dean now

(heh this time there's a good choice and a bad choice so choose wisely)
