The Wall

Between you and me
Stands a wall you can't see;
Strong and tall I built
A barricade of pain and guilt
Because I can't bear to be free.

My heart was sick
So brick by brick,
I blocked out
Every scream and every shout
And from the stillness comes this limerick.

In the presence of the wall you bask,
"But why brick", you might ask?
Because brick is cold,
And unfeeling, yet bold;
And becoming like such is my task.

How I wish I could trust!
How I wish I could just
Turn this wall into rubble--
But to avoid all the trouble,
The wall must remain-- it MUST.
