Thirteen Years of Age - Spring

The lake is finally defrosted. It always froze in the winter, whether you broke the ice or not, it would always fix itself. I sit, side by side with Lilian, watching the fish chasing each others tails. My bow is in reach, as it always is, and my sheath is on my shoulders.

I grab my bow, suddenly feeling hungry and get up. "Come on, Lily."  I look down at her and offer a hand so she can pull herself up, "We're going to look for food." Slowly, Lily pulls herself up but her legs are weak, I can see that.

"Lila," She mutters, gripping onto my hand. "I cant move on," I look at her, her eyes are missing the usual twinkle, her smile is replaced by a frown. I know she's right. "Get Kai."

I cant just leave her here. "What about yourself? I'm not just leaving you here to get her." She takes a few small steps and falls down to her knees. "Um.." I mutter. I lay her down in the soft grass and leave her with my fathers dagger that he gives to me for when I am out.

I sprint off, into the the dark forest. The sun is hidden in clouds and no light shines in the forest. I think it's that camp over there, the one that is kind of camouflaged. I enter it, as I do, with no permission.

There she is, the girl with black hair and them shining eyes, having a laugh with a few adults and a few kids. She turns on the spot and rushes from the group. We walk out of the camp and the laughter dies out. "Having fun in there?"

Kai nods. "What do you want?"

"It's Lily. She's breaking down." Her eyes widen and she quickly runs into her tent and comes out with a spear.

"It's handy, you know." She says, indicating to the spear that's clutched in her hand. I run to where Lily is. She's up on her feet, looking at a hooded figure.

The hooded figure throws his dagger at Lily, "Get out the way!" Kai shouts, throwing her spear. I load my bow. Kai's spear lands in his stomach and my arrow lands in his heart. We turn around, looking at Lily.

Anger fills up in me and Lily takes the dagger out of her stomach and collapses to her feet. "Lily!" Me and Kai scream, rushing over to the places she lies. I hold her in my arms as life seeps out of her body.

"Sing, tell the world to sing. Do it now." That's Lily's last words. Her eyes are still blinking, she still breaths, but she can barely manage it. "Sing."

Me and Kai look at each other for a moment, then a few tears falls down Kai's face. She starts to sing the song Father would sing to me when I was younger.

"Deep in the meadow, under the willow,

A bed of grass, a soft green pillow.

Lay down your head, and close your eyes,

And when they open, the sun will rise."

Kai's voice is beautiful. I begin to sing along.

"Here it is safe, and here it is warm,

Here the daisies guard you from every harm.

Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true,

Here is the place I love you.

Lily's eyes stay wide, staring up at the sky. She doesn't breathe. I know she is truely gone.

"Deep in the meadow, hidden far away,

A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray.

Forget your woes and let your troubles lay,
