Accident

I was walking home from school in the middle of the city, which is not usually what they recommend you do. It was bustling with activity, a city that never sleeps as they say. I was slowly crawling down the street, bag overflowing with work, books stacked in my arms. I was trying my best to avoid crashing into everyone else around me, not wanting to get shouted at. I was going to cross the street, since I had the right of way, when this dinky little car came shooting out in front of me, centimeters away from bashing into me. There was no doubt that they were going double the speed limit.
“Hey! Watch it you jerk!” I continued on my way, almost getting hit 3 more times by stupid, idiotic drivers who were clearly not paying attention at all to what was happening around them.
I finally made it to my dad’s office building, he was a big time surgeon, the kind that everyone wanted when they were in a terrible accident. I was going to slip in to see if I could find him when I heard a familiar voice shout out to me.
“Hey! Need a lift home? It’s gonna be a long wait for your dad to be done working, and it will be a mighty long walk to get home.” I didn’t think much of it, it was a good offer. I could just text my dad not to look for me, that I was getting a ride with Jack. Chase was my dad’s closest friend.
I threw my bag into the back seat of his Lincoln, the zipper almost giving way, before I jumped into the front seat.
Chase started up the engine and crawled out onto the busy street, knowing right away that it was going to take a few extra minutes to get to the other side of the city, which is where I lived. “So, how was school today?” Since Chase was so close with my dad, and my mom for that matter, he was like family to me.
I let out a long, deep sigh. “Boring, did nothing but work, work, work and more work! Haven’t they ever heard of taking a break or two!”
Chase laughed at my expense, and I laughed too. He let me turn on some music once we got going, since we had a bit of a trip ahead of us.
We were driving through an intersection, this one extremely busy, more than usual, when this tiny, little crappy car zoomed out in front of us, no hesitation in their decision. Chase slammed on the breaks, causing both of our heads to whip back to the seat, resulting in me having a terrible throb in my neck.
Chase slammed his fists onto the steering wheel, letting out an almost unholy groan. “What the fuck was that guy thinking! We almost went smashing right into them!”
Chase started to drive again, going slower this time, our hearts still beating as fast as speeding bullets.
I grudgingly pulled my phone out again, thinking my mom would probably like to know that I might not be home for a little bit yet when Chase suddenly slammed on the breaks again! He started cursing his little head off while I tried to fish my phone off of the floor, while simultaneously nursing a seriously sore shoulder.
“What the heck happened this time Chase!” I shrieked as my fingers finally brushed my phone, bringing it into my grasp.
“There was another shitty car speeding through, right ahead of us! Do these people have some kind of death wish or something!” Chase was clearly enraged by all the stupidity around us, throwing his hands up in exhaustion.
We tried to finish our little trip as fast as we could, wanting anything in the world to get off these hideously dangerous roads.
I pulled my phone up again once I was relaxed so I could finish my message to my mom when my head went flying forward into the dashboard. My ears were flooded with the deafening sound of metal meeting metal. I tried to figure out what the heck just happened as my eyes did the best they could to refocus on everything around me. My hands were trembling as I wiped the sweat from my brow and eyes. As my unfocused and panicked eyes scattered all around, I noticed through the haze that there was red on my hands from where I swiped at the sweat. Red? Why were my hands red?
I bent over in an awkward, painful manner as I tried to reach for the clip to release my seatbelt, feeling trapped in a cage awaiting my death. My whole body ached with pain, refusing to work with me to be free, but I finally got it off on my seventh try.
I looked over at Chase, hoping and praying that he would be alright. He was slumped over the steering wheel, unmoving and unconscious. I tried to shake him awake, but the stabbing pain running up my arms and neck were just too much. Tears were streaming down my face as I turned towards my door, wanting to just get out of here. Then I noticed how heavy my eyes felt and how slow my breathing was becoming. I was going to black out! I couldn’t black out! Not now! I had to stay awake!
The next thing I knew, I was in a sterile, empty hospital room. I wanted to look around, see if maybe Chase was in a bed beside me, but I was in too much pain and I was hooked up to more machines than I could name. I started to move my hand, seeing if maybe I could feel if anyone else was in the room with me when the doctor came in.
“Ah, you’re awake! You gave us quite the scare there. How are you feeling?” He gave me a warm, welcoming smile, but I could tell that something about him felt off, but what?
“How’s Chase? Where is my mom? Is my dad here?” My voice sounded so small, trembling with fear and pain.
“Miss, the man driving the car you were in is now in stable condition. He has a concussion and a mighty cut across his forehead, but he’ll be alright. Your dad is here, but he's currently working on a patient.” He let the words roll right off his tongue with the same happy tone, but I knew when someone was trying to fool me.
“Doctor, I asked about my mother. Where is she?” My voice was deeper, hoarser from raising my voice and the threat of tears behind my eyes.
He bowed his head, unable to keep eye contact any longer. “The woman in the other car sustained severe head injuries and had lots of internal bleeding. We were unable to save her, she died 20 minutes after they got her to the emergency room.”
My eyes were unfocused, it felt as though the whole world lay across my chest, squeezing all life from me. “Doctor...where is my mom?” I waited anxiously, hoping and praying that what I expected to hear was not true. Hoping and praying that I would be able to see her again.
As soon as the doctor met my gaze, I let it out, all the tears I had in me, feeling as though I had lost half of my being. He told me without having to say a single word. “I’m so sorry, your mother died in the hospital after the collision between your car and hers this afternoon.”
