CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE: Time Heist
Scott paces nervously around the room, muttering softly to himself as he does. He looks like a nervous wreck, but from the little he's told us about where he came from, I can't blame him.
"He looks like a bloody wreck," Eggsy mutters from my side. Both of us lean up against the bookshelves as Natasha and Steve stand closer to Scott.
"You got that right," I respond.
"Scott," Steve calls, catching the anxious man's attention. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Scott replies, running his hands over his face. As they descend, he poses an unusual and unprompted question. "Have either of you guys ever studied quantum physics?"
"Only to make conversation," Natasha snides.
Scott points haphazardly at her as he continues. "All right, so...five years ago, right before Thanos, I was in a place called the Quantum Realm."
"Quantum what now?" Eggsy repeats, eyebrows pulling together.
"Quantum Realm. It's like its own microscopic universe. To get in there, you have to be incredibly small."
Eggsy shakes his head with a perplexed expression. "Shit gets stranger every day, I swear."
Scott continues with his story despite Eggsy's comment. "Hope, she's my...um, she was my..." The man swallows harshly, and I get the sense that this Hope meant more to him than we know. "She was supposed to pull me out. And then Thanos happened, and I got stuck in there."
"I'm sorry, that must have been a very long five years."
The brunet shakes his head. "Yeah, that's just it. It wasn't. For me, it was five hours."
"That's the way it was for me as well," I add. "Wherever I went after I vanished, it was a place where time was irrelevant. I was there for less than a minute. yet, somehow, when I returned, five years had passed.
Scott snaps his fingers and points to me excitedly. "Like that! Don't think that's the Quantum Realm, but the same principle! Timelessness. See, the rules of the Quantum Realm aren't like they are up here. Everything is unpredictable." He nods his head towards the table. "Is that anybody's sandwich? I'm starving!"
As Scott makes a move for the sandwich, Steve says, "Scott, what are you talking about?"
As he takes a huge bite of the sandwich, Scott replies, "So, what I'm saying is...time works differently in the Quantum Realm. The only problem is right now, we don't have a way to navigate it. But what if we did? I can't stop thinking about it. What if we could somehow control the chaos and we could navigate it! What if there was a way that we could enter the Quantum Realm at a certain point in time but then exit the Quantum Realm at another point in time? Like--Like before Thanos."
"Wait." Steve holds up a hand and cocks an eyebrow. "Are you talking about a time machine?"
"Like Doctor Who?" Eggsy and I suggest at the same time.
Scott looks at us all like we've lost it, as he if wasn't the person just spewing nonsense about time travel and the Quantum Realm. "No! No, of course, no. No, not a time machine." Scott gestures with his sandwich. "No, this is more like a...a..." Eventually, after coming up blank, he mutters. "Yeah, like a time machine."
