"You shouldn't have come here, James." Ouch. She'd said that to him once before and he was hoping she would have changed her mind by now. But that was not the case, and so they stood there, both with their walls up.

His brain was so frazzled from the fresh death of his father that he hadn't even considered this as an outcome. He let himself be vulnerable to her and she'd only made him regret it.

And to think, he came here to protect her. He just wanted to help and she didn't even want to see him. He knew the letter was upsetting but it wasn't his fault.

"Oh- okay." He didn't know what to say, he'd prepared himself for the emotional heart-to-heart he so desperately craved. Then he could explain himself, tell her that the letter wasn't him. It didn't look like he was gonna get that opportunity.

After the death of his mother and his father he didn't have anyone to make emotional connections with anymore. It's hard to live life at ease when there's no one to confide in at the end of the day. He just wanted someone to talk to at this point. He had no one.

All he had left was his car, and he'd hoped Alyssa, but now he realized she could never be what he wanted her to be.

"Maybe I should just go." He didn't want to say that, but now he felt awkward and he just wanted the conversation to be over.

"Yeah maybe you should." Which was the response he had expected, it still hurt nonetheless.

And with that, he left. Now that his car was fixed he'd be free to go, away from Alyssa and away from this town.

He didn't even say goodbye and he knew he'd regret it for the rest of his life. He realized this within the first three minutes into his car ride to no where. He didn't like the feeling it had left him with. It was a strange feeling that he couldn't quite explain.

He was so lost in though that he didn't even notice that the car was running on E. After a good few minutes when he was pulled out of his head by the gas light turning on he decided to pull into a gas station before he left town.

He pulled into the first one he saw and left his car, bringing his sullen energy into the gas station with him.

He moved quickly as he paid for his gas so as to escape and thanked the man behind the counter.

When he left the gas station he noticed a commotion taking place by the entrance of the gas station parking lot.

Some girl was yelling at a car he hadn't noticed when he pulled into the gas station as it kicked up dirt from the road it drove so quickly.

"Yeah, well I never needed you anyways!" She angrily yelled shaking a fist after the vehicle as it disappeared, spraying her with dust in the process.

As soon as it was out of sight she dropped to the ground and began to cry. She folded in on herself and rocked back and forth.

James didn't want to be intrusive but he couldn't stand idly by why this poor girl sat alone on the dirty concrete and cried.

He argued with himself for a moment, worried that she'd react like Alyssa if he asked her if she was okay. Even though he feared his offer would be rejected he began walking in her direction to see if she needed some help.

"Um- hello-" he stammered- unsure of his words as he realized he hadn't thought of what he wanted to say when he'd walked up to her.

She looked up at him from the concrete with big hazel eyes and he couldn't help but notice how beautiful she was even though her mascara had painted her cheeks at this point.

Through her sniffles he heard her speak in broken sentences the best she could-

"Yeah- I'm- I'm fine." She told him without fully looking him in the eye.
