"We should see if the boys wanna go to the movies this weekend" Jessie suggested as we walked down the street. Jessie and I were on our usual walk to my house after school but for some reason, we ended up taking the long way home. As we walked down the street, cars sped past us but we weren't nervous or worried not one bit because our parents had eyes all over town watching us

"They probably won't come. They always busy on the streets"

"Well if you ask Kentrell you already know he'll come. Then the rest of them will say yeah too"

"Me ask Kentrell? That ain't happenin" I shook my head, switching my bookbag from my right to my left shoulder and Jessie smacked her lips

"Why not?"

"Cause, I don't ever know with him"

"Aubri you gotta stop being scared. You 14 now. Y'all like each other and you know that"

"I don't know nothin"

Jessie side eyed me and then looked straight ahead. She then quickly grabbed my arm

"Look! There he go right there!" She pointed across the street at Kentrell who hung out with a group of older boys in somebody's yard. I looked over at him and watch as he talked and laughed with the guys, standing with a blunt in his hand

"Go ask him" Jessie pushed me a little and I kissed my teeth

"You go ask him since you wanna go so bad"

"Forreal Aubri. GOOOOO" she started whining and I looked around, annoyed at her babylike behavior

"Yb. There go your girl" I could hear a couple of the guys from across the street say and Kentrell looked over at us. He made his way across the street to where we were and once he reached us he looked Jessie up and down before giving me a hug

"Wassup"

"Hey kentrell"

He then grabbed my bookbag from me and threw it across his shoulder

"Whatchu doing?"

"Come on"

I looked at Jessie and she shrugged "y'all have fun. My house is right there" she pointed to my aunt Vivian's house not too much further down the road and I made a face at her before she walked off to her house. I then turned to Kentrell and saw him waiting on me so I caught up with him

"What made you wanna walk with me?"

"I wanna make sure you get home safe" he told me as he looked at me and I smiled, keeping my eyes on the ground

"Well thank you"

"You ain't ever gotta thank me. You know I'll always make sure you straight"

I nodded and we continued to walk in silence. Every now and then I could feel Kentrell look over at me and he continued to do so until we started getting closer to my house

"Whatchu gettin into Saturday night?"

I shrugged "I'm not sure yet. Jessie wanted to go to the movies and she wanted me to see if y'all wanted to come"

Kentrell chuckled and stopped walking, causing me to do the same

"What?" I asked confused

"I'll go to the movies.. but only if it's just me and you. I'll pay for everything"
