Chapter Seventeen

Kelli's POV

I sit on a local bench waiting for a bus to take me home, as it seems like hours. I fumble around in my coat pocket for my phone.

As I dial my sister's number, a female pedestrian approaches me, taking a seat on the bench.

"Hey Courtney!" I say enthusiastically. After Dad left for his business trip, living in a city of California didn't feel right to her anymore, and found a life in the big apple.

"Oh Kelli! I'm so happy to hear your voice! I'm so sorry about what happened to you."

"It's fine, all thanks to Billy, my hero."
"I haven't seen him in so long, how is he?"
"He's doing better. He suffered a bullet in his shoulder."
"And Dad?"
"I don't know, he hasn't called yet, and I wouldn't want to bother him, this trip was the only thing that made him happy."
"I know that Kels."
"Anyway, I just can't wait to see you."
"Me too! Oh! My flight leaves in a few. I'll call you when I get there! Love you!"
"Bye Courtney. Love you too."

I hang up, placing the phone in my pocket.

"I feel like I know you from the somewhere." The woman says, startling me.

"Well I'm known for being on the cast of the hit TV show, Lab Rats!" I tell her, starting to feel a bit frightened.

"What's your name?" She asks me, showing no use of emotion.

"Kelli. Kelli Berglund." I respond, swallowing hard.

"Berglund?" She confusingly says.
I don't respond.

"Is Courtney your sister?" She inquires, bombarding me with all these personal questions.

"Yes! Why do you need to know that?" I yell.
She doesn't say a word, she just looks
deep into my eyes, and starts to cry.

"Oh my gosh. Look how much you've grown!" She cries, examining me.

"What are you talking about? Wait I don't even know who you are." I say, removing away her hand she suddenly placed, from my hair.

Her smile fades, as more tears take over. "Of course you remember me! You know who I am, right? I took care of you, and your sister too."

I stand up from the bench, "Who the hell are you?" I say, yelling at the woman once again.

"Don't talk to your mother in that tone!" She scolds, now standing in fromt of me with her arms crossed.

Did she just say mother?

"You can't be my mother! My mother left a long time ago!" I say, raising my voice even more, taking small steps backwards.

"Leaving you and Courtney was a big mistake. You have no idea how much I regret it. I know it deeply hurt Ronald." She confesses, stopping me in my tracks, Ronald is actually my dad's name.

"Why the hell are you here! You can't stand here after so many years and expect me to act so sincere!"

I can't believe my eyes, this woman is my mother. The one who brought such pain and destruction to my family, now it all reminds of everything when I look at her.

"That's why I'm here! I came back from rehab, and the first thing I wanted to do was to see you! You're my daughter...it will always be that way."

"Yeah sure I did come out of you, I have your DNA, but you are not my mother! You never will be!" I yell at her, with tears forming in my eyes at the moment.

"Don't shut me out Kelli, please don't do this to me! I used all of my savings to fly to California to find you, all I wanted is to make up for lost time!"

"You can't make up 13 years of depression, loss, emptyness and betrayal. Don't bother to try and find Courtney and my father, they won't be too happy to see you back in town." I warn her, walking away the bench, hearing her call my name over and over again.

Why is this happening? Today? After all my life? After Eric mentioning her in our conversation? After I went through a rape, and almost lost Billy?

I have to head back to Billy's house. He needs to know this.
