Lots of footsteps can be heard coming towards me as I make my way down the dreary tunnel. My anticipation and fear seems to radiate off me and upon my best friend, Aspen. Trying to stay calm, I pick up the pace and drag her along with me.
My futile attempts to remain quiet are cut short when she lets out an ear piercing scream. I quickly rush to see what's caused her outburst when I see the rat scampering away from us. Letting out a sigh, I grab her hand and continue out of the tunnel until we reach the surface.
"Aspen, what the hell! We could have been in serious danger back there!" I shout.
"Lissa, please calm down. It was stupid I know, I've just been on edge since last week." She says.
Sighing, I walk to a nearby bench and sit down. "I'm sorry; it's hard on all of us. I just don't want anything to happen to another one of my friends."
I can see her visibly flinch at my words but I know I've made my point. If anything did happen to Aspen I'd have no clue what to do. I can't help but pity her for her sensitivity, however the last week was a bit of a stress on all of us. One of our neighboring cities were attacked by a group of them.
The thought alone of our's being attacked gives me chills, but I would never tell her that. I'm the rock, she's the tide. If I get weak, we both wash away. My thoughts are cut short, however when my phone goes off.
Report to gathering immediately.
I let out a dramatic sigh at the text. The Society has gatherings every once and a while to announce progress and developments. Recently we haven't had as many due to our lack of hard workers. Or, at least workers who have a vague idea what the hell they're doing.
We when arrive I sit at our usual table and wait for the gathering to begin. While waiting I suddenly feel eyes on me. I glance over at Aspen only to see that she's absorbed in her phone. Confused, I take a look around only to see a beautiful boy with piercing green eyes staring at me.
