Sunrise, the next morning, with much anticipation Rouge walks up the steps to Shadow's treehouse and knocks on the door. She's removed the bandages and refuses to reset her wing, deciding that she ought to take advantage of her revived, youthful appearance.
"A broken wing isn't very becoming for such an important reunion," she mentally rationalizes.
Aware of her presence, Shadow opens the door. Seeing him again after twenty years is quite the treat!
"Shadow! Just how I remember you! Did you get my surprise?"
He steps outside, closes the door and hugs her.
"Dunno how you did it but thanks, gorgeous!"
Rouge melts, she can almost see heart bubbles in the air.
"Sorry, Shadow. If I hadn't hid him in another dimension in the first place, we might be hugging each other in celebration of raising him together. Hope you can forgive me, sugar. Been waiting a long time to say that!"
Shadow looks her in the eye.
"We would have made a great Team Dark, us three."
Diamonds begin glitter in Rouge's eyes.
"Wouldn't that be perfect? Its not too late for that, darling!"
He's not sure how to respond.
"Rouge, I saw you a week ago. When did you last see me?"
She pretends to be aloof and shrugs.
"Hmph, only twenty years ago."
He hops down to the ground and nods for her to follow him. To his confusion, she, instead walks carefully down the stairs.
"Why don't you fly?" he asks, puzzled.
"Oh, about that. My left wing's kinda busted," she begrudgingly admits.
With a charming half smile, he swiftly zooms to her, picks her up, and carries her away to a familiar ledge with an amazing view.
"Wow, just like the good ol' days, huh?" she smiles.
Gently, he stands her up as they admire the majestic sunrise.
"You look the same but you've changed," he tells her.
"Yes well, I hid in the shadows and watched over him. I never meant to bring him back here. His world ended up collapsing."
"Fifty years of suspension for me, twenty years of guarding for you." Shadow realizes, "sounds like you've been a decent mother. We're friends, that's never gonna change. Beyond that, Rouge, all I can give you is gratefulness. It'll have to be good enough."
"You're welcome," Rouge replies, "now we can share him... our Team Dark love-child."
Warmed and sentimentally charged, the two members of Team Dark exchange a proud grin over their greatest achievement.
