*clears throat*
You should probably sit down. Are you sitting? Good. Now, I promised you, last time I did a rant, that I was saving the makeover rant for another day. Here it is. I was going to rant about something else, but I figured, why not?Makeovers. I don't mind them. I tend to enjoy them. I think it's awesome seeing someone's transformation. But have we become so shallow and narrow-minded that makeovers are the be all and end all of relationships on Wattpad? There are countless stories where the MC is 'ugly', some guy bullies her or rejects her, she leaves and comes back hotter and sexier than everyone else and suddenly everyone is after her?
This links back to the whole shallowness of characters. WOULD YOU ACTUALLY START DATING SOMEONE WHO BULLIED YOU ALL BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT YOU WERE HOT AFTER A MAKEOVER!?!? Would you? I wouldn't. I'd say, "Fuck off, I don't need your shit." Maybe that's just me.
Sometimes, these are done well and I'm not trying to offend anyone! I, in the past, have attempted makeover stories...I will never do that again. Ever. Mainly because the characters were stupid and the MC was just so freaking...UGH! Anyway, it appears to be a necessity in most books to have a form of makeover-ism. Whether it's full blown or just for a party--those one's always get me. You know, how the chick and her BFF get ready and her BFF decides to make her friend look amazing and voila. She's basically a goddess and everyone wants to sleep with her?
....does that actually happen in real life? Did I miss something growing up?Werewolf books seem to be guilty of these makeovers the most. WHICH ISN'T A BAD THING! It's just, it tends to happen in rejection books. The girl gets rejected, the guy's a dick, she leaves, gets a makeover, comes back and the guy is in love with her. The end. That's not all of the stories, by any means, but it's become such a cliche that whenever me and my friends talk about werewolf books, that's what we think of.
If you write a makeover scene, please consider one thing for me. Is this whole process coming off extremely shallow or is there a hidden message behind the makeover? Like, are you actually going to show that a certain character is shallow, or something else?
Like I said, I do like makeovers in books, when they're done well.
I HOPE I DIDN'T OFFEND ANYONE! IF I DID, I'M SORRY!
