"What did you talk to him about?" Hector asked as I walked in.
"Oh, nothing. I just – I had a bad dream. He gave me this." I held up the dream catcher.
Hector grunted as he looked at it. "Nothing concerning, I hope."
I nodded. "He said I don't have to worry about."
"Good. Then put it in your bag and come here."
I quickly followed his instructions and stood in front of him, who was already standing and looking down at me.
"Today, Conrad, before we start the training, I will need to take a look at your chakras. Do you remember what I told you about them?"
"Uh, yeah?" I said, not entirely sure if I did.
He looked at me for a second before he continued to speak. "Well, usually, since training for Shamans starts when they are young, they don't have a special affinity for any of their chakras. An affinity with your chakras determines which ones you are more closely connected to."
"Um, I'm sorry." I raised my hand a little bit before feeling stupid and dropping it.
"Yes?" He waited for my question.
"Uh, what do you mean by having a close connection with my chakras?"
"Remember, chakras aren't just balls of energy connecting you to the spiritual plane. They represent different aspects of who you are. Your self-esteem, your creativity, how you express yourself. Some kids would have some affinity with some of their chakras, but because you're already fifteen you'll naturally have a stronger connection with some and a weaker connection with others."
"So, it's my personality that determines which one I'll be good with? But everybody has different personalities. So how could everyone be good with all of them?"
"Of course," Hector agreed. "Even for me, I have a stronger affinity for my third chakra than my fifth chakra. But to not have an affinity with your chakras or to have it be below the baseline level is just unhealthy for you and your soul."
"So, I just have to reach that baseline?"
"Precisely. I'm not asking for you to change who you are for this."
"Okay." I nodded, standing straight. I didn't know how he would check my affinity with my chakras, but I was ready for whatever it would be.
He nodded, before raising his eyebrow. "Are you using your True Sight?"
I stiffened my shoulders a bit and looked down. "Uh, no. No, I haven't."
His hard voice made me prepare for a scolding, but instead he sighed and said, "If you want to train your soul, you'll have to get used to using it. I'm going to give you a task for me before we begin. I want you to keep your True Sight on throughout the weekend. Don't turn it off until you see me again. Okay?"
I nodded. "O – okay. Should I keep my necklace on?" I already had my hand to it.
"Take it off." He said, so I did, and my soul filled out every corner of the room. He started speaking as I turned on my True Sight. "Good. Now, I want you to keep your eyes closed. Tell me, what can you sense? What can you hear? I want you to describe everything you can without looking."
I knew this trick. I remember at my grade 9 camp, they had led each of us individually into a forested area where they would blindfold us and leave us there, to experience the world without sight. Other people had complained about how boring it was but, I don't know, I found it interesting.
