"Come in," Mr Wilson said even as Hector opened the door. He smiled as the two of us walked in. "It's a pleasure to see you both again. Whats the matter?"
"Alejandro," Hector said before I could greet him back. He sat down on one of the chairs and I stood just behind it, watching the two of them.
"You may be seated," Mr Wilson said as concern showed on his face.
"Tell him what you told me." Hector instructed so I sat down and explained the story again. Mr Wilson listened intently, his eyes on me the whole time, with his face as difficult to figure out as his soul. When I was done, the faintest sight of an amused smile played on his face as he leaned back in his chair and shook his head.
"Oh, that Alejandro." He looked back at me. "I guess that's why you're here then. You must have a lot of questions."
"Yeah, well, some." I realised both of them were waiting for me to continue so I said, "Uh, well, I just want to know if Dr Dos Santos was telling the truth when, well, with anything he said." I played with my thumbs underneath his desk. "I – I want to know if you have been keeping secrets from me."
Mr Wilson sighed and leaned forward. "Yes. But only for your own good. It was decided that if you didn't need to know something we wouldn't tell. We want you focused on your training."
"So, I am being watched?"
"Well," he paused for a moment to find the right word, "you're being surveyed. The –"
"Come on." Hector gave Mr Wilson a look. "Yes, Conrad, you are being watched. I personally don't like it but its important you have Shaman officials to keep watch over you and protect you in case something goes wrong."
"Like what?"
"We wouldn't know. That's why they're watching over you."
"But, isn't that an invasion of privacy or something?" I could feel something bubbling up in me, reacting to the thought of people watching me through binoculars while I was hanging out with my friends, eating dinner with my family, alone in my bedroom with my laptop.
"That's why I didn't want to use watching, Mr Wilson interjected. They were only monitoring your soul. Nobody is sitting in a car and watching your activities. They'll simply know where you are, and will check your soul every now and then, so if something is off in it, they'll come swooping in."
"Oh." I leaned back a little, that feeling slowly vanishing. "So, they cant see what I'm doing." Which also explained why they didn't spot Dr Dos Santos.
"We wouldn't invade your privacy like that," Mr Wilson reassured me. "But now I know that we should've let you know from the beginning. I'm sorry."
"It's okay. It was just bugging me, when he told me."
"But that's not all that's been bugging you, is it?" Mr Wilson asked, looking at me with keen eyes.
Hector leaned forward and spoke. "Alejandro told the boy that somebody might have done this to him."
"Ah," Mr Wilson nodded. "So, now you're wondering if what happened to you was an accident or deliberate, yes?"
I nodded and looked at him. This was the difference I always felt between Mr Wilson and everyone else. With someone who was naturally guarded, like Hector, whenever they hid their emotions, I could still sense something there even if I couldn't tell what it was. With Mr Wilson, I got nothing. It was like staring at a cold, grey wall. Like he wasn't just trying to bury his emotions, but specifically hide them from me. Is it possible he had known I was an Empath before everybody else?
