-Higgs' POV- I wheeze, nearly dragging myself to the next Porter storage unit. I had been walking for almost a full day, taking breaks when I desperately need it. The sun had almost fully set over the horizon.
Nava had fallen asleep again, calmly floating in her pod. I'm just glad to see that she isn't crying anymore.I nearly fall onto the cold metal floor once I reach another storage area. I gasp, slumping against one of the walls of the small room and sliding down to sit on the floor. It feels like my feet were set on fire.
"Christ, that was a long walk," I heave, closing my eyes and resting my head against the wall."We can relax now, Nava." I unhook her from my chest, lightly tapping on the glass to wake her.
She blinks, placing her hand on my thumb. I sigh, wishing I could get her out of there and actually hold her. She would probably enjoy it.I glance around. This area is definitely larger than the other unit. It looks similar to a garage, but with windows displaying shelves upon shelves of cases full of items. It looks like this particular area hasn't been used in a while, but it's still operating.
"If I remember correctly," I whisper. "That circle in the floor should lead to a private room." My uncle used to be a construction worker back when I was a kid. He was one of the guys who helped build the first Porter storage unit.
But that was years ago. I get up, almost limping over to the circle in the floor. I nearly jump when it suddenly goes down. Looks like I was right.
The elevator sinks down and then stops, leading to a hallway. I step off the elevator and walk down the hall.I sigh in relief, seeing a small room once the steel door slides open. The room in front of us kind of looks like a hotel room. "Well, this is better than sleeping on the ground." I yawn, hooking Nava off of me and into the pod holder on the wall.
"Get some rest. You look tired, babygirl. I am going to shower."I turn my back to her, and she immediately begins to cry. "Oh! No, no, no." I croon, turning around and walking back to her. "Don't cry. What's wrong?"
She looks at me, both of her hands on the glass.
"Do...you want to be near me?" I guess. She hiccups, causing more air bubbles to float up.
I sigh in a tired way, taking her out of the pod holder and carrying her to bed with me. "If I sing you a lullaby, will you let daddy take a well deserved shower? Hm?" She giggles.I smile, sitting down in the thin bed and lean back against the wall. "Fine. Fine, you mischievous little girl." I tease, crisscrossing my legs and setting her down on my lap. "Just letting you know, my singing voice is horrid. So cut me some slack."
I clear my throat, thinking of a song."Go to sleep,
Little babe.
Dawn is drawing near." I sing softly.
"Close your eyes,
Sleepy babe.
Shed not a tear." She yawns, much to my relief.
"In the morning,
When you wake,
I'll be right here.
Go to sleep,
Little babe.
Dawn is drawing...near." I finish the song, sighing. That worked. Nava is fully asleep.I get up and walk over to the pod holder, strapping her back in. "Sleep well, babygirl." I say, walking over to the shower as I take off my clothes.
