October 1st was a nice morning. By 9:30 Firewing was already flying off to dragon school, leaving Snowy behind at the house. She looked at the blue sky. Seeing how nice it was outside, she decided to go for a walk near the edge of the jungle. She flew out the door, and landed at the edge of the forest. A soft breeze blew through her feathers. As she took a step, she noticed a rustle in the trees and looked up. There was a small white mechwing in the branches above, trying to hide itself in the leaves of the tree as Snowy looked up. "I can see you, you know," she said to the serpent. It came out from hiding and fluttered down from its perch. Up close, Snowy could see it wasn't all white. There were soft stripes of a whitish-pink color running down its neck, back, and tail like a tiger's stripes. Its eyes and wings were the same pink color, and it had no horn, marking it as female. "Are you one of the mechwings in the group with Cosmo and Nightfall?" asked Snowy. "Yes," the mechwing said. "My name is Spindle. Come with me."

Snowy followed Spindle's lead into the jungle. The two reached the little waterfall that Nightfall had led her and Firewing to. Spindle flew behind the waterfall, and reappeared with a bundle of sea-blue berries wrapped in leaves. She dropped the berries, and said "We found the sweetest berries in the jungle for you and the green dragon." Snowy gave them a sniff. They smelled sweet, like candy. "Thank you," she said. A few mechwings were perched on the branches of nearby trees, watching. A blue one fluttered down on the other side of the pool. Snowy looked up at the trees to see how many were watching. There were quite a few. Suddenly, she felt the aura of a dragon. "There's a dragon near here," said Snowy. A few of the mechwings could feel it, and they flapped their wings and gave quiet squawks. "But this place is a secret," said Spindle. "Maybe someone is just taking a walk in the jungle, and ended up here by accident," thought Snowy. The white dragon looked up into the trees on the opposite side of the perched mechwings, and saw a familiar pair of green eyes staring back at her. Oak.

The tree dragon was in his bird disguise. A few mechwings had spotted him, and screeched in protest, beating their wings. "What do you want?" snapped Snowy. Oak's gaze fell on the bundle of sweet berries, and he swooped down towards them. Snowy tried to move the berries aside, but the thief was too quick and grabbed them in his claws before Snowy could scoot them aside far enough. He flew into the trees, and a few mechwings tried to follow, but Oak was too fast for them. Snowy took off after him, following him. Soon, she followed him to the Heart Of The Jungle. Snowy looked around for him, but couldn't find him. She landed on the ground, and a familiar tree dragon fluttered over to her. She was joined by Pepper.

"Hello," said Pepper. "Hi," replied Snowy. Pepper spread her wings. "What brings you here?"  she asked. "Do you know about the mechwing group in the jungle?" Snowy asked. Pepper nodded. "Yeah, I've seen them splash around in the little waterfall pool. They chase away any dragons who get close." The little dragon folded her wings. Snowy explained "Well, me and Firewing have made friends with them, and they gave me a bundle of sweet blue berries, but Oak was watching from up in the trees and he swiped them and flew over here, but I lost track of him after he passed through." Pepper hissed and ruffled her feathers. "I thought I told him to stop doing that," she hissed. "Do you know where he keeps the stuff he stole?" asked Snowy. "Yes," replied Pepper. "Follow me." The tree dragon fluttered out of the Heart, Snowy following behind. They flew through the trees for a minute or two before Pepper stopped in midair, hovering about ten feet from the thick trunk of a dead tree with a massive hole about 24 feet up from the ground. "Thank you," said Snowy, flying into the hole in the tree, leaving Pepper behind to fly back into the Heart.

The tree was completely hallow, and it was so large that Snowy, from the center of the trunk, wouldn't be able to touch both of the tree's walls even if she spread her wings as wide as she could. The top of the tree had either been broken off or rotted away, but Snowy guessed that when the tree was alive, it was 200 feet tall at least. She flew down the trunk, ignoring the slithery red centipedes and brown mottled beetles crawling on the rotting walls of the tree. "It's like a cave," thought the dragon, descending to the bottom. When she was outside of the tree, Snowy had noted the massive, ugly growths near the bottom, which made the hallow room on the bottom of the dead tree's trunk much larger. In the cavernlike room, was a pile of stuff, including the glowing purple crystal Snowy had found during the walk that had led the two to meet Pepper, the leaf-wrapped bundle of berries, and a smooth, rounded white object that Snowy took to be either an odd-shaped rock, or an egg.

Oak was sitting on top of the pile. He had removed his black-berry-juice-painted bird beak to reveal his feathered snout. He looked up, and saw Snowy. "What are you doing here?" he hissed. "Oh, reclaiming stolen goods," said Snowy, as she picked up the berry bundle in her claws. Oak gave the closest thing to a roar as he could, and attempted to fly at Snowy before he hit him with her tail, knocking him to the ground. "Is that a mechwing's egg? Hmmm, I wonder where that could have come from," retorted Snowy. Oak gave a hiss. "None of your business," he snapped. "I'm taking it where it belongs," said Snowy. The white dragon landed on the pile of trinkets and transferred the berries to her jaws, before picking up the crystal and egg in her hind paws. The dragon found it hard to fly while carrying so much weight, and she the crystal slipped from her paws. "I'll get it later," she thought. Carrying the egg and the berries, she flew to the secret mechwing pool. She set down her items she was carrying, and spoke, "I found the dragon who stole the berries, and I found an egg in his treasure hoard too. Is it one of yours?" A few mechwings approached the egg and sniffed it. "A mechwing egg, indeed," said a green mechwing. "Who's egg, exactly?" asked Snowy. "Hmmm," said a purple-pink mechwing sitting next to the green one. "Reign lost an egg, if I remember correctly. She's a green-yellow one with golden stripes. A real beauty." Snowy looked around. "Is she near right now?" The pink mechwing flew off. "Jackfruit should bring her over," said the green mechwing. Snowy waited a few minutes, and the pink mechwing- Jackfruit- returned with the yellow-green and gold mechwing that must be Reign. "You said you found my egg?" asked Reign, worried. "Yes," said Snowy. "Right here." She pointed a wing at the small white egg. The glittering mechwing walked up to it and gave it a sniff, before lightly tapping it with the tip of her snout. Snowy hadn't noticed before in the darkness of the hallow tree, but there was a small dark shape under the surface of the shell with a little head and stumpy tail. "Yes, this is indeed my egg," said the grateful serpent, breaking into a smile. "Only 5 days away from hatching. Thank you." She rolled the egg into the cover off the trees. "You've helped us yet again."
