...
Peter hated attention. He hated it. So, naturally, he was pretty upset after receiving many stares and whispers and giggles and slaps on the back during school because of that stupid video. Who even recorded him singing? Were they trying to make him uncomfortable? Because it worked.
He sighed as he finally stepped off of school grounds and into the busy streets of Queens, where he could be just another part of the crowd.
Or so he thought...
A rough tap on the shoulder got him to turn around, where a young woman was standing and smiling. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Um, excuse me. Sorry to bother you, but are you the boy in this video?" She said as she showed him her phone screen, which was playing that cursed video.
He grimaced. "Uh, yeah. Yeah that's me. Why?"
She giggled. "Um, do you think we could take a picture?" Peter's face went from a grimace to plain confusion.
"A - a picture? With me? Why? I'm not even famous!"
She scoffed. "Of course you are, silly! You're video went viral in under twenty-four hours! You sing so nice, and you're super cute! Everyone is talking about you!"
Peter gulped. "E-everyone?"
She nodded, and snapped a picture anyway. Peter was sure he didn't look good in that picture at all, what with his confused, pale face, but he wasn't about to ask for a retake, so he just nodded and walked away.
As he continued on, other people began to stare and point. Peter felt so uncomfortable, this is what it was like to be famous? He felt so bad for the Avengers. Other than risking their lives to save the world, they had to endure this every time they went out??
Peter pulled his hood over his head and kept looking down so that nobody would be able to see his face as easily. Eventually, the stares came less and less, and he felt better...That is, until the hairs on his back stood up as he noticed two camera men behind him. He remembered that they had been trailing him for sometime now, but he hadn't thought much of it since there were so many people around.
He began to pick up the pace, and they did too. He didn't want to make a scene, so he quickly turned into the next empty alleyway and climbed to the top of the building before they turned the corner.
Peter watched as they entered the alleyway, and searched all the possible hiding spots for him. He sat down feeling light headed. For some reason, he was spooked by a couple of harmless camera guys trailing him even though he had been fighting crime for nearly a year.
He closed his eyes and laid on his back, trying to slow down his breath, but jumped when his phone began to ring.
He reached a shaky hand toward it, and picked it up. It was Tony.
"H - hello?"
"Kid! Kid, are you ok? I was just watching tv, why were they were following you? What happened? Is everything ok? Should I-"
"M - Mr. Stark! It's ok! I - I'm ok! Really!" Peter did his best to calm his voice down, but the silence on the other end of the phone told Peter that Tony could tell something was wrong.
"Kid, where are you?" Tony's voice said, less frantic this time.
"Um, I'm on top of a building... I think it's that one apartment complex on fifth street?"
"Ok kid, sit tight, I'm coming to get ya." Tony said, and with that the call ended.
Peter put his head in his hand and brought his knees up to his chest, shivering despite the particularly warm temperature. He felt horrible, like he was about to throw up. His vision was blurry and his mind was spinning, and he felt like he was about to pass out.
He hoped Mr. Stark would get there soon.
...
"So you wanna tell me why they were following you on TV?" Tony asked Peter, who was huddled in a blanket on the couch with a mug of hot coco in his hands. The rest of the Avengers crowded around the shivering boy, and Natasha felt so bad, she sat next to him and let him rest his head on her shoulder.
"Um, well - I think it's because of this video that someone posted about me." He said.
"Video? What video?" Wanda asked.
"Uh - well, someone took a video of me and posted it online. It was me singing... in the school bathroom..."
"Wait, wait, wait, what? Someone took a video of you singing in the bathroom??" Clint said.
Peter's face reddened and his eyes widened. He squirmed. "N - not using the bathroom! I was washing my hands!" He sighed.
"It went viral because everyone says that I have a good singing voice... or something..." he mumbled. There was silence for a moment as everyone thought it over.
"Well, what are we standing around for? Let's hear it!" Steve said, and everyone nodded in agreement.
"Huh?" Peter looked up to see everyone look at him expectantly. He began to feel uncomfortable again.
"Uh... I - uhh..." he stuttered.
Tony glared at everyone and took the empty spot next to Peter on the couch. He clicked his tongue in disappointment. "Ok, singing in front of people obviously makes him uncomfortable if I had to go pick him up from a rooftop! And he's been chased around all day, so he's probably pretty shaken up, right kid? Why would you ask him to sing right now? Don't you have any-
"I- it's ok, Mr. Stark." Peter piper up. He turned to face the others.
"I don't really feel like singing right now, but maybe another time? Or you could just watch the video, if you want... when I'm out of the room, of course." He said as he gave them a nervous chuckle.
They all looked at each other, and Peter saw them pass small nods to each other. Eventually, Nat yawned, and began to walk out of the room.
"Well, it's kind of late, and I'm tired. Guess I'm turning in for the night, bye!" She said as she rushed away.
"Uhhh, I'm tired too. I will also retire to my chambers." Thor said, as he and the other followed Nat until Peter was left alone. He heard whispering in the next room, and crept up to the doorway.
"Play the video already!"
"I haven't found it!"
"Make sure it's not too loud so he doesn't hear."
"Wait, he said he wasn't using the bathroom, right? Cuz I don't wanna see that..."
"Shut up, I found it! Listen!"
The whispering stopped, and Peter could hear his voice through a phone speaker. A light pink came over his face as he heard the team gasp in astonishment.
"Wow, he really is good!"
"You didn't believe him?"
"No, you just don't hear many good singers these days."
"Shut up, Clint. You can't even hold a note. Peter's naturally gifted! No wonder he went viral."
Peter smiled. The light pink had turned into a deep red and now covered his entire face. He was happy to know that people enjoyed his singing - especially the Avengers. He didn't care about the people chasing him with cameras or the whispering or the staring he got from others - as long as had the support of his family, he was fine.
