The gunshot changed everything.
They didn't speak when they went home together. She had watched him exile Sam without a word. Watched the first casualty of their new purgatory get laid out on the altar like a fresh sacrifice. And then they just drove back to his house in silence. She glanced at him from the passengers' side. The way he clenched the wheel in pace with his jaw. His eyes were flashing as if seeing a different road ahead for the first time, one of infinite possibilities. Plotting. Maggie leaned her head against the window and decided she needed a strategy.
Later, her arms encircled him as he brushed his teeth. She met his eyes in the mirror and he cocked one eyebrow.
"Everything is going to be different." Maggie said, "We get to make the rules now."
"Is that so?"
She knew that she had to be deliberate in everything, that he was watching her closely, so she moved to stand in front of him and nuzzled her face into the crook of his neck. Kissing it lightly, "I want you to make the rules now." She whispered and then hesitated before looking up at him, "Like you do for me."
He stared back in that bottomless way he did when he was thinking. Then he flipped her body and bent her down over the sink. He ran his hands hungrily over her ass as he pushed her skirt up and pulled down her panties. She hoped that he was desperate for her. Campbell frantically tugged his boxers down and pressed his hardness into her ass.
"Oh baby you're still so swollen." He cooed, wetting his fingers before stroking her.
"I'm sorry." Maggie answered automatically. He pulled her upright against his chest.
"I know you want to make me happy." He said, relishing every single word selfishly, "But you need to tell me when your body isn't ready yet baby."
"It is!" She protested and turned to face him.
Campbell looked her over. Her developing tits. Her long skinny legs. Her shaved pussy. He had created something absolutely perfect.
"C'mon." He kissed her sweetly, "Let's go to bed. I'll be gentle."
The bathroom door was left ajar. Sam wasn't supposed to be home yet. No one was. Campbell's door was closed. But she was crying on the tiles. Maggie hugged her knees tightly. Something made Sam take a step back into his own room, hiding himself, without alerting anyone of his presence. His brother came out half dressed. Shirtless with only a pair of boxers. He stood in the bathroom doorway, his girlfriend choked on tears in front of him.
"How bad are you bleeding?"
"I'm sorry, I didn't know it would start--"
"I still want you."
"What?"
"I still want you." He crouched down, it felt like he had done that for her a million times, and touched her hair, "It's only your body baby, nothing to be ashamed of. You never disappoint me. I always want you." Campbell reached out and cupped her cheek, "I love you Mags."
Long after that moment Sam wondered if he had bought into something too easily. If he unknowingly looked up to his brother even more hopefully than she did. Campbell had been kind and he had eaten it up, let months of closed doors mean nothing more than love.
