Maggie screeched in surprise before she recognized the calloused hands, the lips on at her ear, "Gotcha." She giggled and turned to face Campbell. Elle looked down, feeling like she was intruding on a private moment.
"Ok." Maggie took Elle's hand again and raised it up with hers as if in some motion of female solidarity, "Take us to jail."
"You know." Campbell pretended to act reflective, stroking his chin, "I'm feeling pretty generous tonight." He tipped his head to the side, "I think only one of you is really deserving of incarceration." Elle didn't need to be told where this was going, she raised her eyebrow at Maggie, who looked at her with wide eyes and shook her head.
"But the night's only starting..." Maggie pleaded and held onto her hand tighter. Anger flashed in Campbell's eyes momentarily but he pushed it down and smiled dangerously.
"You really want to take your new friend down with you babe?" He asked, "I mean fine but-"
"Ok run." She pushed Elle away laughingly, "I'm sacrificing myself for you, you'd better win!"
"I'll try?" Elle responded and started running again. Forcing a playful smile onto her lips. She was unsettled by Campbell. Something in the way he touched her-- she didn't want to think about it too hard.
Once the other girl was out of sight Maggie reached up on her tippy toes and kissed him on the lips. She was smiling. She was happy. And she didn't know that at that moment that was all that saved her, "What are you going to do to me?" She asked, her eyes glistening, "As my captor?"
"Haven't quite decided on a ruling yet." He took her hand in his and they started walking down the quiet street on the outskirts of town, "Did you have fun with your new friend?" Maggie nodded her head enthusiastically.
"She's really nice, I like her."
"I'm glad baby." He leaned down and pressed his lips to the top of her head.
"Thank you." She blushed in the dark, and tilted her head up to look at the stars, "For giving me this night."
"I'd give you anything." He responded automatically, not really paying much attention to her as he watched smoke billow from the downtown. She followed his gaze and they looked at each other, "Rape and pillage." He muttered.
"Why'd we even bother reading Lord of the Flies in the first place?" She noted darkly and rolled her eyes, bristling against the sudden chill that overtook her. He laughed.
"And to think a lot of these losers were about to go Ivy league."
"Cassandra will call another meeting tomorrow." She sighed, leaning her head against his chest, "Impose sanctions, audits, politics. All for one, one for all. Pass the conch." Campbell looked down at her, her eyes fixed on the world burning.
"Baby?" He asked and she looked up, "What exactly did your dad keep in that shed?"
Maggie didn't even have to raise her hand, Campbell reluctantly raised his and everyone tended to just assume. She didn't exist to them outside of him, she never had. She was basically asleep on his arm, having spent the entire night going through her father's inventory with Campbell. He was methodical in the way he did things. Afterwards, she was convinced there were missing items, though she couldn't place why. Things she knew he had but couldn't find. Her mother, let alone anyone else, couldn't have known how to access the backyard paradise of ammunition and provisions that she had witnessed him stock as a child. It was keeping her restless.
Elle glanced back and smiled at the sleepy girl. Maggie smiled back, with a little signal to text her later while Campbell was turned away. The other girl nodded conspiratorially at Maggie and returned her eyes to the front of the church while Cassandra was looking pleased with herself and her victory. She shook herself a little more awake and tapped Harry Bingham on the shoulder.
"Are you ok?"
Harry wished he had something nice to say to the sincerity of her concern. But for some reason it just made him nervously glance to his friend. As if to seek approval. Campbell barely noticed the interaction. His eyes fixed anonymously on something else, "Are any of us ok? Do you know how many bedrooms my house has?" Harry tried to play it off as a joke, "Welcome to the Manson family, thanks Cassandra."
(Sorry for any mistakes and brevity. I have to write this on my phone for a bit and it's a little tricky. DM if you have any ideas for the story.)
