Mr Linton,
You are 3 minutes and 42 seconds late. This shall be deducted from your wages.
Rikkard Ambrose.
"You know you can talk to me, right?" I shouted. Silence. That bloody chauvinist miser. He takes every chance he can get to deduct from my wages, and never opens his lips to say a word.
"Fait chier, espèce de connard radin!" I muttered. (He really annoys me, that miserly asshole)
Mr Ambrose thinks he know everything about my life, but what he doesn't know is that my father was half French, so I've known how to speak French since I was 5 years old. That's how it was so easy to learn some Portuguese and Spanish, they're both Latin based languages like French, so there were similar words.
Plink!
The noise of the arriving note pulled
me out of my thoughts. Time to get to work!
————————————————————————
At exactly 8 PM, after a long day of file fetching, I entered Mr. Ambrose's office.
"Sir, it's 8 o'clock, may I be dismissed?"
He gave me a cold glare before saying that I could go home. When I got to the entrance doors of Empire House, I saw that outside, it was pouring with rain. In winter. I would get sick for sure! It was freezing to the point where I missed the warmth of the jungle, something I thought that I would never do.
Bet that's not the only thing you miss from the jungle. Yes it is! Are you sure? Do you not miss learning how to shoot a gun? Yes I do, actually, you're right. Learning how to fish? Yes, that was fun. Having Mister Ambrose pressed up against you, entangled in a passionate embrace? Ye- what? No! Of course not! Suuuuuure.
Shaking myself out of my thoughts, I surveilled the road. I would have to walk home, lacking the money to get a cab, not that there were any. Any sane person would be inside having a nice, warm cup of tea. Anyone who didn't work for Mr. Ambrose, that is.
"J'en peux plus de ce bâtard." I said to myself. (I can't deal with that bastard anymore)
If only other men employed women. Then I could resign and get a job, but no. I was stuck with that chauvinist son of a bachelor.
Shivering, I walked home and changed into a dress before entering the house, only to see my Aunt Brank. Uh oh, I'm in trouble...
"Where have you been? And why are you all wet?"
I quickly fabricated a lie.
"Well, you see, Aunt, I was having a nice stroll in the park when I met this young gentleman. We started talking, until he said that he had some business to attend to, and, a few minutes after he left, I started raining. I took shelter, hoping the rain would go away, but once it became evident that it wouldn't, I hurried home."
Aunt Brank eyes me carefully, before saying
"Was he rich?"
"He seemed to be." I replied.
Then she did something terrible. Something that would give anyone nightmares. She smiled! Actually smiled!
"Good girl. Off to bed with you."
"Yes, Aunt" I said, still shaken from the horrors I had witnessed.
As I entered my room, the first thing I heard was "Oh Lill, where are you? Have you been abducted by some ghastly rake? Have you run away? Oh Lill, please come back!"
I stood there awkwardly for a second watching Ella sniffle on my bed before coming to my senses and saying,
"Always happy to please!"
Ella gave a little cry before standing up, running to me and hugging me.
"Oh Lilly, are you alright? Where were you, where you with your secret lover?"
"Um, yes, and, uh, yes of course, we are so in love that we didn't see the time pass!", I replied delicately untangling myself from her embrace.
After some very inventive lying on my part to numerous questions she asked me, Ella helped me out of my dress into my pink nightgown.
As I lay in bed, my body seemed to refuse to sleep. I was too hot, then too cold, and there was nothing I could do about it other than push my covers off me, then pull them back up. Then, horror of horrors, I sneezed! I knew I was going to be sick!
