POV; KIARA
I had a small research on who Sofia is. Surprisingly, we do look similar. The hair, height, face, skin tone and features do look alike. The only noticeable difference is that she wears a spectacle and I don't. She used to be the star senior of our University. A topper in everything, studies, sports, arts, and all.Wheww....do humans like that really EXIST??
Our university is one of the best in Australia. Getting an admission here is quite difficult with many exams and tests. But there are a few in our school who got in through a talent search exam and were given admission here via scholarship. Both Theo and I come in this few.
Sofia is now doing her doctorate at the University of Melbourne
And Sofia is not Theo's girlfriend.Period. That kiddoo! Sometimes he just gets in my head. I don't know how...
Today coincidentally Mia, Joe, Theo, me and those white ladies had sports together. Those ladies have been trying to pick on me since the first day when I came with Theo. I think, their gang leader 'Maddy' has a crush on Theo and probably has misunderstood that there is something between me and Theo, which is so not true. So she is trying all possible ways to trouble me.
Today our athletics teacher (coach) made us all stand in a line. He had all the big runners of our school to stand in front of us. Mia, Theo and Maddy were standing among them.
Coach then said, "we need a new runner to compete in the upcoming inter university sports meet. Is there anyone who would like to join?"
There was pin drop silence. No one wants to join , mostly because they didn't want to make a fool of themselves up there.
"Kiara! Kiara!" shouted Theo. Then he was followed by Mia then Joe and many others. I used to play a bit of badminton at school and while warming up many have seen me running (I did like to join and would have given my name by myself. But I didn't ,only because of Maddy). Now I had no choice. I was asked to join the team to the ground for a trial run. I was tense as I had to compete with Maddy and many more. All of them are experienced runners and professionals. But I am not.
The coach blew the whistle. Everyone ran as fast as they could. After I completed half the round something started to poke my feet. It didn't bother, so I kept running. I was running second just behind Mia. With every step the pain grew till I reach the point where I couldn't take it anymore .I collapsed right there on the track. I couldn't run. The first to come to me was Theo. I somehow pulled my feet out of the shoe. Theo spotted the rusted nail I had got in my sole which went right through my right toe. It was bleeding .I could see Maddy and her friends laughing at me from a side. I was sure it was one of their dirty tricks to take me out of the team. But was I ever going to give up that soon?......nah.I took some rest and got my wound bandaged.
The coach came to me. " I don't think you'll be able to run with that bad injury. It's okay. We can give you a chance next time. Shall I take in someone else?"
I didn't give a second thought and said, "Would you help me clear the track for a second run?"
He was a bit surprised by that. Many tried to stop me. But the decision was already been taken. I am running this. The runners assembled again.
The whistle blew and the race began. I saw every single one run ahead, leaving me behind. I was losing. My mind kept saying, loser. Loser. Loser. I was angry. I yelled at myself, " I AM NOT A LOSER".Then was the real run. Even before I knew, I crossed the white line. I looked ahead of me."No runners ahead? That's strange!". Then I turned back. There they were. Running behind and yet to finish. I was smiling or perhaps, jumping and cooing like a maniac. It wasn't like in the movies where I break the golden school record of the fastest run with bare foot. But I sure did beat Mia and Maddy. So that means a victory.
I was selected to the team and now the pain was gone. The wound still bleeds but who cares.
