Chapter 14

POV Jughead

I could tell that Betty was annoyed about me buying the dresses and crashing their shopping trip but I didn't care. I realized after lunch that Toni wouldn't have the money to buy a dress at the stores that V and C would shop at and I wasn't about to let her go without or be embarrassed. I wasn't expecting Betty to understand or realize that Toni wouldn't be able to afford the dress though. It made me like her more but I also needed her to understand that I take care of my people. Toni is a member of my gang and my friend, it's my job to take care of her, not Betty's. I really wasn't planning on buying Betty's dress or V's but since she pushed the issue, I decided to prove my point. I knew that Dad wouldn't mind especially when I explained who it was for. He really wanted Betty's mom to rejoin the Serpents. He told me that he would even like to get V's mom too. Any way that we could show them that we would help and protect them would be ok in his book.

"Food court?" I asked Betty and she shrugged and looked back at the rest of her friends.

"Sounds good to me" Kevin grinned at Fangs as they linked hands. Betty softened when she saw that. I was beginning to understand Betty a bit more. She hadn't changed as much as I thought. She was still that sweet girl that I knew back in elementary school. She was fiercely loyal and would do anything to help her friends. She didn't like for others to help her though.

"You know that I'm only letting this go because C, Toni, Fangs and Kevin are happy, right?" she mumbled to me and I grinned.

"I didn't know that you cared so much about Fangs and Toni's happiness" I asked and she shrugged.

"Of course, they're awesome and my friends. I want them to be happy" she answered simply. I looked at her.

"What about Sweet Pea, V and I?" I questioned.

"V doesn't care if you guys are here and I don't trust you or Sweet Pea" she said, bluntly. I blinked at her for a moment.

"You don't pull any punches, do you?" I smirked and she shrugged.

"Nope." she answered as we reached the food court. She let go of my hand and grabbed V. They hurried off to get something to eat. Sweet Pea came up to me, shaking his head after them.

"I can't figure her out. Sometimes I think she likes me and then sometimes it seems like she hates me." He muttered and I grinned.

"Let's go get some pizza" I suggested and he cheered up. After we got our food, we found Kevin and Fangs waiting at a large table. They smiled when we sat.

"Where are the girls?" Sweet Pea asked.

"Toni and Cheryl are over in the Panda Express line. I'm not sure where B and V went though." Kevin answered just as V sat down next to him with a tray. He turned to her with surprise.

"What?" she asked.

"Isn't Betty with you?" he asked and she shrugged.

"Nope. She's in line for Taco Bell. She loves that place" V explained and we all looked over to the Taco Bell line. We spotted her in a moment and while V and Kevin grinned, Fangs and Sweet Pea frowned and I was pissed. Betty was standing by the counter, flirting with three guys. I could tell that they weren't from our school and when I took a closer look, I realized that they were members of our rival gang the Ghoulies. Not only were they members, one of them was the leader, Malachi.

"Boss?" Sweet Pea asked as I stood.

"Stay here but keep an eye on them" I answered darkly. Fangs and Sweet Pea nodded but V and Kevin looked confused. As I walked over, I noticed that C and Toni sat down at our table. I saw Fangs explaining something to the group and figured that he was telling them who these guys were. I strode over to Betty, hoping that she would just play along for once.
