"Mornin' sweetie." Mama greeted me the next morning, as I came into the kitchen.
"Mornin' Mama. You look nice."
"I've gotta go into town today, I said I would help with the bake sale ready for Thursday."
"Ah, right ok."
"I'm gonna try and be back early because the weather has taken a turn for the worse this mornin'." Mama informed me.
I went to the window to see that the sky was dark and cloudy, "It looks like a storm's comin'." I guessed.
"Oh dear."
"Are you sure y'all should be goin' Mama?"
"I'm sure I will be fine. I can't let the church girls down."
"Ok, just be careful."
"I will do, darlin'. Make sure all the animals are locked away after you've fed them."
She placed our breakfast in-front of us and sat down opposite me, "Oh, I forgot to tell you that Eddie ain't feelin' so good today. His father rang me so he can't come and help you today."
"That's fine. I hope he feels better soon."
Mama nodded, "I'm sure it's just a common cold with the weather change."
We ate the rest of our breakfast in comfortable silence, before Mama stood up and kissed me on the cheek, "Call the church if y'all need me, darlin'."
"I will do. See you later, Mama." And she was gone.
I drained my tea and threw my light, waterproof jacket over my body. It looked a little chilly this morning, with this bad weather coming. I was relieved that the harvest was over so we wouldn't lose any crops, but I was worried about the animals if there was going to be a storm.
I started my morning off by milking the cows as usual. I placed the buckets of milk into the house, so they weren't blown over in the storm, before I went round to each animal, feeding them. The wind had picked up now and it was getting very cold. I wrapped my jacket around me tighter and pushed the hair out of my face. I felt a drip on my cheek and looked up... the rain was here. I was regretting only having a vest top on with no bra underneath my jacket.
The cows and chickens were locked up, but the sheep and pigs were still roaming around in their outside areas. The rain started to come down more heavily and I cursed as I ran to the pig sty.
"Hallie! Hal!" I heard a voice call from the distance.
I whipped around to see Noah running towards me, wearing jeans, cowboy boots and a big coat.
"Nice boots." I laughed. "What are y'all doin' here?" I asked, when he reached me.
"I've just seen on the tv that a big storm is coming, and I was worried about you and your mum being here alone."
"Mama is helping to get Thursdays bake sale ready." I informed him.
"Let me help." He offered before starting to shoo the pigs and piglets inside in the warm.
I had to laugh at him, standing there trying to shoo a pig. I doubled over, clutching my stomach, full on belly laughing.
"What are you laughing at?" he called to me through the pouring rain.
"You look hilarious." I admitted.
I pushed the last of the pigs into the barn and locked the door safely, before we ran over to the sheep pen.
