Sitting in that corner, that dark feeling of loneliness comes and washes over my body once more. Teddy is staring daggers at the ground, fists clenched tight. Chris is staring at him, in silence. In anger. Vern is sat in the corner of the tree house opposite to myself, eating a pack of pez from his pocket. He always makes me smile. Gordie is looking out of the window, off towards the woods.
From where we're all sat, it seems like a stalemate. The air is thick, and the draft is cold. Even with the windows shut, I still shudder from a nonexistent breeze. It's tense.
Minutes pass. Not a single word is said.
I stand up.
I cross the room to Teddy. My hands are shaking as they reach out to him. He tilts his head sideways, his glance barely grazing my own. Teddy takes one small step towards me. Before anyone moves or anything in my brain tells me to stop, I hug him. I hold him in a confused, cold embrace.
Still crying, I say the only thing that comes to mind in that moment. "Four eyes you dipshit, never do that ever again"
I pull away laughing, and he looks up to me confused. My laugh seems out of place, and yet needed in that moment.
"Who's up for a walk around town?" I suggest.
Gordie looks to me with a somewhat impressed expression. I smile back at him lightly, in response.
I lead the group, and stumble down the ladder. Once I'm on the ground, I take a moment to hesitate, I hadn't really planned on where to go. We all laugh quite childishly as we walk in a line down to the center of Castle Rock in a march.
Teddy takes the lead, "Alright soldiers, let's go! Left! Left! Left, right left!" He proudly parades us across the street to a local diner.
As we enter, Vern gives a quick wave to the server sat near the front counter. We all slide into the chairs in front of her.
"What can I do for you boys?" She smiles, then turning to me, "And you madame?"
The time seemed to pass by slowly as we all forgot anything that might've been troubling us, we ate our food and laughed. Vern sat beside me with a milkshake, and whipped cream on his nose. I barely notice it fall from morning to afternoon before we leave the diner once more.
Without any words shared between the five of us, we all walked down to the creek to just have a pretty end to our night.
"Hey, if you don't mind me asking Y/N, what happened to your arm?" Teddy sighs
I smile, "It's a long story really. It doesn't matter."
I run my hands along the cool creek water, and feel a slight splash on my nose. I look around to the boys who are giggling like always, content in this moment together. Then another drop hits, then another. I search for Teddy hidden in the water, but I don't see anyone. I must have looked baffled by the water because I hear Chris's calming laugh from beside me.
"It's raining Y/N." He laughs
I hit his shoulder playfully, "Yeah yeah, I knew that."
"Pssht, yeah right you did."
I roll my eyes and plop down on the rocks beside the creek, "Shut up. I knew it was rain."
Chris takes an excited breath in, and his eyes light with that blazing fire that's so familiar to his personality. "Y/N.." He grins, "I don't shut up,"
Teddy, Vern, and Gordie all chime in on cue, "I grow up! And when I look at you, I throw up!" They all scream into the darkening sky.
Gordie bursts out laughing, "Holy hell man, I forgot about that."
