I open my eyes and realize that I am in a bed. I must be in my dorm-wait, that means I sit up and see Elena lying in a bed next to me. I groan. "Combiesto." A cold tingle snakes down my spine, after the feeling dissipates, I am fully clothed in my school wear.
I get out of my bed and look at the clock on the wall: 7:56. We're supposed to be at our school tables by 8:00 for breakfast. I pull out my wand. "Consurge." Blue light flew out of my wand and hit Elena. She sat up, fully dressed.
She looked at the clock and smiled. "Thanks." I nodded and stepped out of the dorm. There were several flights of stairs, I turned right and went down the flight of stairs. Elena hurried after me. "Hey! Wait up!" Instead of slowing down, I got faster.
I cannot be alone with Elena, it's too painful. I don't want to kill her, but eventually I'm going to have to, sometime before May. Sometime before my coronation. I ran the last few steps and made it to the Raven table. Breakfast was already out and students were eating. Elena sat down.
"Hey, I'm sorry for attacking you." No you're not. I faked a smile. "I was just scared. I thought you were going to kill me." Please, stop. I picked at my eggs with a fork. "Hey, I'm really sorry." I slammed my fork down.
"Shut up! Please! Just be quiet!" Tears rolled down my cheeks. Fortunately, breakfast was over and students were heading to their first classes. I stood up, slung my bag over my shoulder and headed for Vitology.
"Claira! Claira, please!" I heard Elena's voice, she sounded hurt. Please, Elena stop. I'm hurt just as bad as you are. I couldn't stop the tears, each time I heard Elena yell I cried more.
I finally turned around, Elena was about five feet from me. Her eyes were red and she was crying. "Elena, I'm sorry. But, I really can't talk right now." I tried to give my best reassuring smile.
"Fine! Hate me! I don't care! But you're going to regret this!" I frowned and turned around. If Elena wants to be a bitch, then let her be a bitch. I'll just kill her sooner.
I made my way to Vitology. When I entered the classroom, I saw Elena sitting in my seat. I rolled my eyes. That was fine, I decided to sit next to Tarkus in the back. "Hello class! The first thing I want to do is collect your homework." I sighed and pulled out a paper that was written on front and back.
Everyone's paper magically floated to the front of the classroom, where they stacked themselves on the teacher's desk. "So! Today, we will be discussing a little bit more on the Mortum Vivere topic. I heard someone in here has mastered it?"
Everyone looked at Elena. I raised my hand. "Yes, Claira?"
"Isn't Mortum Vivere considered a curse? That is punishable by death?" Ms. Zelenko frowned.
"It was. But the law was dismissed years ago, although if used in the wrong way, it can be punishable by death. But, let's not talk about that here." I smiled and nodded.
"Anyway, everyone please take out your notes." I groaned and took out a red notebook. My pen wrote on its own, as Ms. Zelenko was teaching.
"Now, Mortum Vivere is a very powerful spell. If you are angry, whilst using the spell, the effects the spell has on the target can be deadly. If, on the other hand, you are using the spell for self defense, then the target would just fall asleep. And no extra harm would be done."
This was actually interesting, I raised my hand. "Yes, Claira?" Ms. Zelenko said, sighing.
"What would happen if you were angry while casting Mortum Vivere?"
"Well, a number of things could happen. It would just depend on how angry you were. For instance, if you were just a little angry because of something small, then the effects could be nightmares while the person is sleeping. But, if you were furious, there could be nightmares, brain damage and possibly hallucinations when the target is brought back into consciousness."
I smiled. "Anyway, class, it looks like our time is up. You don't have any homework!" I shut my notebook and packed my things. Elena looked angry. I was actually kind of worried that she might cast Mortum Vivere on me.
But, I dismissed the thought. If that happened, I'm sure I could disarm her, or block the spell before anything was done.
When I exited the classroom, I noticed that Elena had stayed behind to talk to Ms. Zelenko. I wonder what she's up to. Curious, I put my ear to the wall and listened.
"Ms. Zelenko, are there any other curses that I should know?" This voice was definitely Elena's. She sounded kind of joyful.
"Yes, the killing curse. The incantation is this: Mortum Incantatum. It will kill someone instantly." I held my breath.
Was Elena going to try to kill me soon? Was she planning to do something today? I decided to go to the only person that I know can help me: Ms. Yakovla.
I run down the hall, pass the charms classroom and head for the library. I heard some other Raven students talking about how the library has all kinds of spells and charms, along with curses and whatnot.
When I arrive, there is almost no one there. Perfect. I walk in and look for a sign that says: заклинания-spells. Almost instantaneously, I find the section. It's chained off, but I sneak in anyway.
This section has thousands of books, the shelves almost reach the ceiling. The librarian's desk is directly in front of this section. I'm looking for a book, a very particular book. I look up and down the shelves, until I find it. After about five more minutes of looking, I finally see it.
The book is titled: Spells: Magical Transportation for Beginners. I open the book and dust puffs out. I flip through, page after page, until I find the spell.
I hear footsteps. I have to hurry, I can't risk being seen here. Then, I hear voices, they're getting closer. One voice sounds a lot like...Elena? Crap, if she sees my, I'm dead.
Come on, come on, come on, spell where are you? Ah ha! There you are! The spell is called, the portal charm. It has a simple incantation: Praetervala.
The voice gets closer, I hear books getting dropped, picked up, and discarded. Elena must be looking for something. If I don't want to be discovered, then I better master this spell now.
"Praetervala." I mutter. All of a sudden, everything starts to get twisted and distorted. Colors start to blend, until everything is black. I feel wind, then the wind stops and I feel cold granite. I open my eyes and breath a sigh of relief.
I stand up, Ms. Yakovla is staring back at me. "Hello, Claira. What has brought you here?"
"Elena. She's trying to kill me. I heard her ask Ms. Zelenko about a killing curse, she told Elena Mortum Incantatum." Ms. Yakovla's friendly expression turns ice cold.
"I was afraid that this would happen."
"That what would happen?"
"That Elena would realize that she had to kill you, or at least get revenge for ingoring her this morning." I groaned.
"You saw that?" Ms. Yakovla nodded. "Well, she was acting all apologetic this morning before she totally flipped. I just didn't want to deal with her. I had to much on my mind."
"I understand. Unfortunately, Elena does not. So, she resorted back to her original plan: to kill you. She probably also got suspicious when you weren't talking to her, she probably thought you were up to something. Which is true."
I sigh. "Well, what do you want me to do? What if she uses that killing spell against me? How can I protect myself?"
Yakovla smiled and took out her wand. "Aequin." A gold amulet with a red diamond appeared on my neck.
"This necklace will protect you from the most darkest of magics. But, only once. So, if Elena ever casts Mortum Incantatum, the necklace will protect you. But, you must kill her immediately after that. Do you understand me?"
I nod.
