-30th November-

Oh what a night, I managed to find a hotel close by to Miguel's place, for a nice £7 per night. It was very cosy as I shared the room with a host of mosquitos and cockroaches. The roaches were especially interested in my plastic food container, don't leave that stuff out at night if you don't want roaches crawling on your legs the rest of the night. Despite slaughtering three mosquitos I still managed to get on the receiving end of numerous bites, let's hope I don't regret not getting the yellow fever vaccine!

Currently on the chicken bus to the city to pick up a rental car for the mini road trip. First time in one of these buses, fortunately it is not too packed as it is a Saturday.

Finally we found the Avis car rental spot but we were put off by the $2000 deductible payment we would have to pay if the car was stolen by thieves, which apparently happens!

We walked through the organised chaos that is Mercado Terminal. The place had it all, fruits, spices, vegetables, cacao to name a few. It is always an enthralling experience walking through a foreign marketplace. The market had an abundance of seasonal foods that were triple the size of stuff we find back in Europe. The avocados and papayas were ginormous.

The stuff in the bags goes by the name of Pepita, it is actually the ground seeds of pumpkins. I bought a small bag as it goes well with Papaya, I can confirm this was a factual recommendation. Be careful about mentioning the word Pepita in Honduras as it means Pussy. (Female private area)

We stopped off for a coffee break at a small site run by natives of Santa Cruz de Quiche

We stopped off for a coffee break at a small site run by natives of Santa Cruz de Quiche. We spoke to one another and they recommended I visit their hometown if I wanted to avoid gringos. ( I don't mind seeing gringos) They were very friendly people and were keen to take some photos together.

Having spoken with the Quiche people I am excited to visit the Guatemalan highlands. There are some old Mayan ruins that will surely provoke some contrasting feelings and a vast expanse of hills to get some exercise. I am hoping to meet some locals to educate me as my knowledge of the Mayans is very limited other than they had a fascinating knowledge of stars, performed human sacrifices, liked having sharp teeth, rivalled Egyptian architects and were avid growers of papayas, avocados and cacao. Let's see if I can fill the gaps.
