-December 1st-Most the day has been spent taking advantage of the WiFi at La Discoteca Cafe y Musica, when travelling it is nice to stay in a place for a few days or more to build relationships and not just rush from location to location. (Shout out to my auntie and uncle for letting me overstay my welcome last month in sunny Florida).
Speaking with Pablo and Mariella (the cafe owners) about how the city must invest in new public transport and ditch the dangerous and polluting buses they suggested I read an article revealing that the ancient ex American vehicles are owned by booky (corrupt) privatised companies. Furthermore, the article states that the bus companies may well have ties with gangs which could explain the extortion and robbery of passengers and the killings of bus drivers of which "3,100 were murdered between 2001 and 2018." I was less surprised when reading that "the national government had funneled to the transport sector more than three billion quetzales" of which "$35 million" were supposed to create a "pre-paid system.. thereby undercutting extortion and insecurities." To top it off a former president was impeached due to a massive "embezzlement scheme" relating to the disappearance of state funds. It seems corruption is rife here. I hope my bus to Antigua tomorrow morning is not red. The photo below is an example of what bus NOT to travel on. ( I did not take that photo) See link at bottom for article on bus corruption)
The bus above is considered okay by locals.
After organising travel to Antigua and Lake Atitlan I travelled to San Miguel Petapa to pick up my regrettably huge rucksack that Miguel kindly stashed in his apartment since my arrival. I didn't stay long as Miguel's sister and son had a fever. Miguel was sentimental about my departure and wished he could come along. I told him he had the starring role so far and would be welcome in London whenever he wants (if I ever go home). He mentioned that the first country he'd like to visit in Europe is England, he would be a welcome guest for sure.
Miguel said he saw a great opportunity to practice English upon meeting me and said it was great to be able to simultaneously speak to an English Gringo whilst observing facial expressions. This made sense as he is accustomed to working in a Canadian call centre, something I predict being an impersonal experience. Saying that, typically Canadians are some of the friendliest people on the planet, but you know what I mean. I am supremely grateful to have met Miguel, not only was he a trustworthy guide in a hectic Guatemala City but he symbolises the type of human the world needs more of, his enthusiasm and sincerity were second to none. Gracias Cerote. I know you will read this. (Cerote translates to 'a piece of shit' - according to Miguel, amongst friends, Guatameltecos use it as a friendly insult) If I am wrong don't shoot the messenger.
I am looking forward to getting out the city to see Antigua and Lake Atitlan, the shuttle will arrive at 6am tomorrow morning, farewell to the loveable yet gritty Guate.
