‘No, thank you, Harry. I’d rather not spend my holidays by listening to Ron go on and on about his wonderful Lavender. I’d rather puke,’ Hermione stated definitely. She crossed her arms to signal the end of the discussion of spending Christmas at the Weasley’s. Harry nodded since he knew well enough that Hermione was stubborn and they walked down the stairs together, ‘anyway, I like to be alone, you know me. I’ll curl up with a good read and no one will be in the common room to bother me. I promise, I’ll be fine and we’ll go to Hogsmeade when you come back.’

‘I’ll send you your present by owl then,’ Harry said warily as they reached the end of the stairs. They stood side by side and watched the students leave Hogwarts for their holidays. Hermione felt a twinge of pain and longing to join them. She would be spending Christmas alone... although she had Draco. Lucky for me, Hermione though sarcastically and turned to Harry, ‘I’ll see you when you get back then.’

‘Sure,’ Harry allowed her to hug him for her sake rather than his. As all of Hermione’s hugs were, he felt appreciated afterwards.

Hermione watched him leave the castle and he caught up with Ron who was waiting for him. Lavender must be close by – she always was – like a little puppy, Hermione thought and if it were any other day she would’ve felt horrible about thinking that but she didn't care at all today. She watched the last student leave who was almost sprinting so that he didn't miss the train. Once the huge hallway was empty and Hermione felt like her heart was boarding the train to London as well, she started to climb the stairs. Staying at Hogwarts on Christmas for Draco Malfoy – anyone would have thought she was joking.

GET OUT OF MY WAY!’ A deep voice grunted impatiently and Hermione was pushed aside by an elbow. She would have toppled down the stairs if it wasn’t for the railings.

Hermione hung onto them as a life saver and watched the blonde hair getting farther away from her. On impulse and curiosity, she straightened herself up and jogged after him, noticing the paleness that dawned on his face. She grabbed his arm when she caught up to him and twisted him around, ignoring the fatal look in his eyes.

‘Granger...’ Draco warned and never before had he looked so dangerous and murderous as though his eyes could crucio Hermione alone.

Hermione’s eyes were drawn to his hand immediately which seemed to be oozing blood so rapidly that it seemed almost fake although she knew it wasn’t fake. Draco would not have been so riled up and wincing if it was fake. His shirt was covered in large spots of crimson coloured blood and even his hair had blood dotted around them as though he had run a hand through his hair without thinking. There was also what looked like... pieces of glass resting in the blonde hair.

‘Just walk away and forget you even saw me today,’ Malfoy whispered in a low and deep voice that Hermione was sure that was the sort of voice girls fell at his feet for.

‘Malfoy, what did you do...’ Hermione whispered, a hand went to her mouth and she felt the familiar urge to be sick. She usually got that urge when she saw Ron and Lavender together. It repulsed her. The blood sickened her to her stomach. Draco winced and gritted his teeth together as he looked down at his dismantled hand.

‘Are you done staring, Granger, or shall I let you stare some more so I can bleed to death!’ Draco yelled and Hermione could do nothing other than keep her mouth in a perfect O shape.

Draco grunted under his breath and then turned on his heel, about to go up the stairs but Hermione grabbed his arm. He twisted around and their eyes met with a sudden curiosity burning in both of them. Draco wondered why she had even stopped him and how she dared to touch him where his dark mark was burned into his skin. It burned briefly as she touched it but it was bearable and he tried his best to not flinch away.
