Rain was gushing down at around 2:45am, no other sound was heard besides the rain, until the frantic sprinting of one broke the rain's tune. He couldn't stop running, even if he could, he won't. Shivering from both fear and the cold, he feared that he might slip and fall, allowing it to get closer to him. He could barley see in front of him, not only was it so dark, but his contact lens was knocked out from a previous close call with it.
He wasn't sure if it was still behind him, but he wasn't going to risk finding out. He made a sharp turn when he came across a dimly lit street light. It wasn't death that he was scared of, but getting caught by whatever it was, did. He suddenly crashed into something, knocking the wind out of him for a minute. When he got up and felt what he ran into, he let out a shaky, weak gasp. It was a hard, flat surface. His best guess, it was a wall. He felt around on all fours in case if they were any other walls surrounding him. His fear intensified even more when he felt another one on his right, he frantically checked his left by feeling around there.
A wall was there too.
His stomach sank as if it were a bowling ball the second he realized that he was cornered. For some reason, the rain had stopped falling, but it could still be heard for some reason. As he backed up tightly into one of the corners, tears that were building up from earlier, were now flowing out of his eye.
Everyone in this town only had to fear one thing, pain during death. But fearing their own future, and what unimaginable torture they would be forced to endure, was something that never really crossed their mind, until now. A sudden crack of thunder from nearby caused him to cry out of fear, accidentally giving away his location.
He held his breath when he heard the sound of crunching leaves getting closer. He felt the ground around him, and found a small rock. Having an escape plan in his mind, he threw the rock at one of the walls, where the source of the rustling seemed to put it's focus on the sound of the rock making impact with the wall. Now was his chance.
He got up and quickly ran in the direction he came from, but the other being near him immediately heard his quiet, but fast footsteps as if they had bat-like hearing. Strangely, the other being didn't do anything about it, knowing what was about to happen.
*CLANG*
He ran right into something hard that was made of metal, stunning him for a few seconds. A small amount of pain was coming from his arm, but that was nothing compared to what he felt when he heard footsteps stop right in front of him.
As he heard breathing above him, his mind was panicking. He tried screaming, but nothing came out of his dry mouth. Realizing that he couldn't even cry for help, he just gave up, thinking that it would all end right then and there.
That was when something soft gently grabbed his hand. He looked up, but only saw darkness.
"Don't worry if you can't see me, I can see you. I'm here to help." A female voice spoke calmly.
He was hesitant, but he slowly stood up, struggling to keep his balance at first. Just when he thought he had balance, he slipped and fell into the female's arms. The lower half of his body completely gave out from all that nonstop running.
"Ok, hang on a second..." The female sighed.
She suddenly scooped him up in her arms, bridal style. She then ran back the way he came, to his confusion, the rain started pouring on him once again.
"You ran into an old sewer pipe that was partly blocked off." She simply told him, making perfect sense for his thoughts from before. He began shivering again, as he closed his eye so the sharp rain drops wouldn't pierce it. After minutes that felt like eternity, the female kicked something with her foot, making a knocking sound. The door flew open, temporarily blinding him by the sudden light.
"Shadow!! Oh my goodness!" A female voice shouted in panic. Shadow rushed inside, still carrying him.
"Is he hurt?" Another female voice asked.
"Just a cut on his arm, he's cold and wet." Shadow replied.Shadow brings him over to a fireplace and placed him in a nearby arm chair. He just sank into the cushions, he was given a blanket, he curled up in it like it was a shield.
He looked up and saw Shadow sitting in front of him with a medical kit. The purple tiger pulled out some alcohol and bandages.
"Can I see your arm?" She asked softly. He obeyed without hesitation, but he had the feeling that something was different about her. She was clearly talking to him, but she didn't make any eye contact.
"This might hurt a bit." She added as she carefully applied the clear liquid. He hissed in pain and flinched as the alcohol settled into his wound. He watched as she wrapped his arm in the bandages, just leaving his sleeve uncovered, and also what would be his hand, but it was instead replaced with a hook. He couldn't bend his arm at all due to the bandages, but at least the wound stopped bleeding at this point. He checked under the blanket and groaned when he saw that his shirt was stained by his own blood.
"Hey, I never got your name. What is it?" Shadow's sudden question snapped him back into his situation. These past couple weeks have been anything but easy, whatever this thing was, it had already caused nearly everyone in this place to disappear with little to no trace, or none at all. He managed to collect himself before speaking.
"R...R-Russell..." His scratchy gravelly voice choked out.
"Russell?"
The sea otter nodded, still feeling skittish, but felt that Shadow was a good person. A girl with dyed dark blue hair swiftly approached the two, startling Russell by her sudden presence.
"Erika, you're scaring him."
Erika, who looked as if she'd still be in high school, took a step back and smiled sheepishly.
"Oh, sorry about that." She talked rather loudly, but was being nice nonetheless. Russell squinted his eye and tried leaning forward to get a better vision of the two, but his arm rubbed against the chair while doing so, causing him to jump back at the sudden sharp pain.
"Are you having trouble seeing?" A much calmer female voice asked from a small distance. A taller girl, that looked older than Erika with long black hair came over and bent down to Russell. Without saying anything, she reached for something in her pocket. She then handed something to Russell.
"Would these help? They're my spare glasses." She asked calmly. Russell put them on, and blinked a couple times. The older girl actually had a similar eye prescription, allowing Russell to see everything clearly.
"Ya-ha-har!" Russell exclaimed happily. He immediately blushed and glanced away after doing so.
"I-I just do that when I'm excited..." He added sheepishly. "Well, Shadow swishes her tail around when she's excited, right?" Erika replied cheerfully, to which Shadow nodded back.
"Luna? Is everything alright over there?" A girl with light brown hair asked the one with the black hair. "Yeah, Sunny. Everything's good." Luna replied back.
"Hey, Shadow?" Shadow turned her head to Russell. "Thanks for saving me back there. I really mean it."
"I'm just doing my job." Shadow replied with a smile.
