(Alex's POV)

"Wake up, you shank!" I hit Thomas slightly hard in one of his legs that were dangling out of the hammock. Thomas woke up suddenly. He looked disoriented for a second, looking around until he saw me.

"Come on greenie, today is your day, follow me" He swung his legs over the side of the hammock and climbed to his feet.

"Where are we going?" Thomas asked.

I didn't miss a beat. "Just shut up and stay close."

We walked around for a little bit more looking at the different sections of the Glade as I explained everything.

''Where are all the girls? Are you the only one?'' He asked. Valid question, as so far he'd only seen boys.

''Yeah, I am.''

''Must be hard''

''I got used to it after a while. Like I was saying, Glade's cut into four sections: Gardens, Homestead, Blood House, Deadheads,'' I pointed them out as I talked. ''And everybody in the glade has a job. First you need to work with the keeper and then the council comes together and they put you in a job you'd best at. There are the Builders, Brick nicks, Sloppers, Baggers, Cooks, Track-Hoes, Med-Jacks, Slicers and Runners''

''Do you think there would be another girl coming to the Glade?'' I sighed.

''Hey! Are you even listening to me, shank?'' I stopped, noticing the lack of attention from Thomas and waved my hand in front of his face. This is going to be a long day fellas.

He nodded.

''Good. Let's continue...''

We stood near the Box—double doors of metal lying flat on the ground, covered in white paint, faded and cracked.

''This is the Box, once a month we get a newbie like you, never fails. Supplies and clothes also arrive in the Box once a week. And before you ask, no... we don't know jack about the shanks who send us here, you get me?''

''Oh I almost forgot...there are only 3 rules. Everyone does their part. Don't ever let me catch you slacking. Number 2, Never hurt another Glader, simple as that and...never go outside the Glade unless you're a Runner. They are the only Gladers allowed to go in'' I pointed towards an opening in one of the four walls. ''

''Why? What's out there?'' Yep, full of questions this one.

"Better hope you never find out," I answered.

''Why are you guys so secretive?''

''That just the way it is''

Minho appeared around a corner up ahead, running from one of the large walls that encase and separates the Glade from the Maze. Covered in sweat, his face red, clothes sticking to his body. The boy didn't slow, hardly glancing at Thomas and waving at me as he went past. I just smiled and waved a goodbye.

Thomas suddenly started walking towards the east opening.

''Whoa, where are you going? Those are about to close.'' I shout running to catch up.

''What are you talking about?''

''The doors, you shank! Each wall has an opening in its center, called the Doors''

''Doors?''

''Those big openings?'' I pointed out at the huge gaps in the walls. ''Well, they're doors. They close every night and re-opens every morning. That's it''

A loud boom exploded through the air, making Thomas jump.

"Calm down, Greenie," I crossed my arms over my chest while yelling over the noise. "It's just the walls!"

As the walls nearly finish closing, he took a few trembling steps back for a better view. An echoing boom rumbled across the Glade signaling that the Doors has seal shut for the night.

''Don't worry. You'll be all whacked for a few days, but then you'll get used to this place. We live here, this is it. Tomorrow you'll start with builders''

I laugh shaking my head, leaving Thomas standing there with a shocked expression on his face.
