Chapter 6:
Ace returned a half hour later to see the girls lying on the bed, watching TV, and laughing. Hearing Evangeline laugh was the best thing he had ever heard in his life. Ace began to think about how often Evangeline would laugh at him and eventually their kids. He imagined her laughing at the kid's fighting and telling them to run along. He smiled.

A cough brought him out of his daydream. He looked up and saw the girls staring at him. He chuckled awkwardly and held up the items he had brought. He looked down at the thick sketchbook and the premium colored pencils. Ace knew Evangeline liked to draw, that's why he had set up an art studio for her up in the attic. But until she was comfortable enough to move around, some paper and colors would be a nice addition to her entertainment.

Ace looked up to Evangeline and saw her eyes widen at the items. He took a couple of steps closer and laid them down on the bed near her and left. Heart pounding at the clear excitement on her face.

Evangeline spent the day in bed with Brooke. She drew pictures while Brooke talked to her. It was very weird for her, being in a house where people smiled at her and treated her nicely. She honestly didn't know what to make of it. She figured that when she healed, it would go back to how it was back at Archie's house. But for right now, she was liking being taken care of.

Ace and Brooke had been very accommodating and Ace had even brought her drawing materials. She had never held such nice material in her hand and she was amazed at the quality of the colored pencils. She hoped it would stay like this for a little while at least, but she knew eventually she would be back on the floor, afraid and hurt.

Evangeline looked up at Brooke realizing she had missed most of the conversation and smiled. She jumped right back in and focused on Brooke's words trying to ignore the warning in the back of her head.

Ace went in to check on the girls a couple hours later. He had been trying to work, but with his thoughts wandering back to the girl in his bedroom, he had decided to take a break.

When he walked in, Brooke was talking while Evangeline drew in her sketchbook. They both stopped to look at him. He realized that he had no real reason to be in the room. His face grew red because of the tension.

"I was just wondering if anyone was hungry?" he said trying to come up with a reason for being in the room.

Brooke looked at Evangeline and she shook her head. Brooke looked at Ace and he nodded. He got the message. He was making Evangeline uncomfortable and he needed to stay away. He turned towards the door and left for the rest of the day.
