Chapter 7:
Ace was running up the stairs as soon as he heard the crash. He had been sleeping on the couch, instead of his room: the place the sound had come from.He burst open the door to find the bed empty and the closet door wide open. He headed into the closet. There was Evangeline, going through one of his pants drawers. She was muttering something he couldn't hear. Ace knocked on the door and she jumped, turning around.
"What's going on, love?"
Evangeline started to cry again. She sunk to the floor sobbing, muttering words.
Ace picked up on certain words, "I have to go back," but everything else was jumbled in with her sobs.
Where does she have to go, he thought. Why does she not want to go back? This mades him upset. She should never have to go somewhere she doesn't want to go. Especially places that make her act like this. His anger turned towards himself. It was his job to make her safe and happy. To make sure she didn't have things in her life that made her react like this. His anger took on a new form: protectiveness.
He went over and picked her up, despite her flinches, and placed her on his lap. He hugged her to him and she, unexpectedly, turned and cried into his chest.
"You don't have to go," he repeated in her ear, "I will never make you go, you are safe."
Slowly, she calmed down. When she came back to, she realized her position and apologized profusely. Promising it would never happen again and a new shirt for him, she went to run out of the room. He grabbed her arm and turned her toward him, "don't worry about it. Are you ok?" He looked her up and down worriedly as she nodded.
Ace walked her out of the closet, leaving the mess for the next day, and walked her to bed.
"Evangeline, where do you not want to go?"
She shook her head. Ace nodded, "you can tell me when you're ready". She shook her head again and opened her mouth to apologize again. He saw what she was going to say and chuckled. "Don't apologize. I'm here for you anytime, love."
"I'm sorry, it's just too dangerous if you know." Ace smiled at this. If only she knew how dangerous he was, she wouldn't be so worried about him. She was only a little mouse, but she was trying to protect him, a lion.
Wordlessly, Ace tucks the blankets in around Evangeline and goes to leave.
"Wait," a meek voice said behind him, "stay, please...only if you want to."
He turned around to see Evangeline trying to sit up with the tight blankets.
"Are you sure, love?"
Evangeline nodded. Ace smiled, he didn't need to ask twice.
He moved the covers off the other side and slid into the bed. Ace moved Evangeline close to him, pretending not to hear the quiet gasp, until she was right under his chin. He fell asleep with a smile on his face.
