Luke
It had been two days, five hours, twenty-nine minutes and thirteen seconds since Violet had been in a coma. I never left her side, only leaving for bathroom breaks and for food. Jai was with me often, and so was Jenna. I slept on the couch in Violet's room, sleeping amongst the many Get Well! cards and huge bouquets of flowers. Beau brought her a new bunch everytime he came. James had bought her a teddy bear, Skip left her a box of chocolates, and Jai had boughten Violet a silver heart locket. I didn't know what was inside.
"Any progess?" Jai says to me, walking into the room. He wears the black and white plaid shirt from the 'Life of A Dysfunctional Family" Janoskian video, dark blue jeans, and black Vans. His hair is tousled and messy.
I shake my head, glancing at Violet's sleeping body. She looks so beautiful, even if she is in a coma. Her hair is loose and curly, the way it is naturally, over her slender shoulders, and her skin is dewy and glowing.
Jai sighs, and walks over to her bed. He takes her hand into his, carressing the side of it with such tenderness that I don't think I've ever seen before. He is murmuring something softly, so gentle that I can't hear him. I step out of the room to give him some privacy.
I go around to find Jenna. The nurses smile and greet me as I walk around-they've come to know me well since I'm here basically the whole time. Miriam is my favourite one- she's Violet's main caretaker.
"Hey Karen, do you know where Jenna is?" I ask the secretary, who is managing the front desk.
She looks up from a stack of papers, and pushes up her black glasses over her slightly hooked nose. "She told me she was going to the cafeteria a few minutes ago with James and Beau."
I nod. "Thanks. See ya." Karen gives me a wave.
I find the three of them huddled indeed in the back corner of the cafeteria, talking in hushed voices. There isn't many people for once in the cafeteria- an elderly couple is drinking coffee, a mother and her son who has a broken leg are eating, a teenager reads a novel with a cup of hot chocolate and bits of a chocolate chip cookie on her plate, and a man reads the newspaper while eating a croissant and tea.
"Hey guys," I say, approaching them. James and Beau give me a friendly hello, but Jenna's eyes slide down to her caesar salad. Awkwardly, I slip into the seat beside her. She stiffens when my arm accidentally brushes hers.
I don't know what to think of Jenna and I anymore. I mean, we're not dating, but we aren't exactly in a "We're just and only friends, no romance feelings" situation right now, either. We both have feelings for each other, but we also like other people simultaneously. If you asked me a week ago if I was in love with Jenna, I would have given you a straightaway yes. But now, I just don't know. I'm confused of where my heart lies. With Violet, or with Jenna.
"Any updates on Vi?" Beau asks worriedly.
I shake my head, sending the subject of Jenna to the back of my head to deal with later. "Same as usual." This couldn't be good, it had already been two days. 48 hours. Violet needed to awaken from her coma as soon as possible. I was getting more anxious with each passing hour. I knew everyone else was too; especially Jai.
Beau sighs, stabbing into his pasta with defeat. "What are the doctors doing?"
I shrug. "How am I supposed to know? I bet they're doing all they can. I mean, there's not much that they can do for Violet right now in her case, right?"
James nods. "Yeah, I suppose. But with technology these days, you'd think they'd be able to lull her out of that coma or something." I know that we all just want Violet to awaken, healthy and normal. But what defines normal?
