Luke
This is probably the biggest fight that I've ever had with Jenna Polizzi. I mean, we never fought, never like this. Before, it was just playful bickers, ones that didn't have such a drastic edge to them. But of course, that was the past. I think it's about time I stopped living in it.
"Hey Luke!" Jai appears in my doorway, flanked by James and Skip. He gives me an encouraging smile. "Michael Hensley-y'know, the guy our age a couple doors down? He's a real good one, and he's invited us to his mega-exclusive party tonight. It's gonna be big."
I let out a sigh. "I'm not in the 'partying' mood right now, Jai..sorry."
Jai's face droops with disappointment.
"Come on, Luke! I know things are rough between you and Jenna and everything, but some good old fun will cheer you up! You gotta come with us," Skip says.
I shake my head. "Seriously guys, I can't..."
"You're coming!" A cheerful voice says. Violet squeezes underneath Jai's arm, giving me a beseeching look. Although seeing Violet instantly brigtens my mood a bit, I'm still feeling down.
"Violet.." I whine.
She smiles, and pads into my room, taking my hand and yanking me off of the bed. Boy, that girl is strong. Violet looks me in the eye and says, "Plleeeaaassseeee Luke! Come with us! I know you secretly wanna!"
God, this girl knows me too well.
I sigh again, this time in defeat. "Okay, okay. Fine. I'm going."
Everyone cheers and claps their hands, and I smile meekly at them. I'm too tired, too exhausted with sadness and despair to do much anything. I've never really liked argument, drama, the whole nine yards. All you ended up with was that sick feeling in your stomach, one that grew more and more whenever you saw that particular person. It was kind of the same thing with love. Pain and heartbreak, lost and a feeling of hopelessness. Wasn't it two sides of the same coin?
"What time is this party?" I ask, kicking a stray shoebox. It lands nosily on a crumpled piece of paper, scattered amongst a pair of jeans, a basketball, and an empty soda can.
"Approxmiately seven o'clock," Jai answers swiftly. "But we'll be heading over there maybe a half-hour later. Just to be cool." I roll my eyes.
"Great," I say.
The rest of the afternoon goes by in a flash- Violet and I head over to the corner shop, and I treat her to an ice cream cone, feeling a lift of happiness rush through me, but I've always felt this way with Violet. It's different, from when I'm with Jenna. With Jenna, I feel nervous, lovestruck. Like I need to be careful about what I do so I don't turn her away. I want Jenna to love me, but with every shitty thing that's going on, I don't think that's possible. But Jenna has many admirers- losing me won't be that big of a deal. She'll move on quickly.
As Violet and I start walking down the street to our neighbourhood, my phone buzzes in my pocket. I smile apologetically at Violet and slip it out. My stomach tightens when I read the name, and the message.
Jenna: We need to talk. Please.
I start to type out a pissed-off reply, but I stop mid-way when I see Violet, ever so beautiful, in the corner of my eye. She doesn't deserve to have to see me in a mad mood- I want her to enjoy herself. It's summer, after all. And from the way that things turned out a while ago at the start of her summer wasn't so excellent.
Instead, I pocket my phone back and turn my head to talk to Violet.
"Excited for the party tonight?" I ask, smiling.
