One: The Beach

The summer rays poured down onto the side of my face, and I groaned. The heat in Melbourne, Australia had always been kind of hot for me in the summer, but this was extreme. I placed a hand on the AC dial, and cranked it up even more.

"Woah there Jenna Bo Benna; before you know it, we'll all be ice cubes," my best friend Luke Brooks said from the seat behind me. I turned around and gave him a dark look, and wiped a bead of sweat from my forehead. I felt icky and gross in the shorts and tank top I'd pulled on over my bikini.

"Remind me why we're going to the beach in such fricking hot weather when we could be inside a house, that's properly air conditioned?" I said through clenched teeth.

"Because," replied a cheerful voice-Jai's ,"It's the first day of summer! Who doesn't want to spend it on a nice beach?"

I sighed, returning to fiddling with the straps of my tote bag. It wasn't like I resented going out to the beach with some of the Janoskians- plural for my very good friends Luke, Jai, and Beau. Daniel and James had stayed behind-James was spending the day with his girlfriend, and Daniel had a family thing he needed to attend.

I'd known these guys- especially Luke- since I was little. My best girlfriend Violet had come along with me for the beach day. She sat in the back with Luke and Jai- she and Jai were the closest of best friends since they were in diapers. Violet lived on the left side of Luke and Jai's house, and I lived on the right side. We were all like a closely knitted family, except we weren't related to each other.

"Any chance of us getting to the beach before we fucking turn eighty?" Luke grumbled. He readjusted his Obey snapback once again. I laughed, turning around to give him a grin. "We'll get there, Lukey," I cooed.

Luke smiled warmly at me, and I felt myself become lost in his warm gaze. To be honest, I'd kind of had a thing for Luke recently. I mean, before, I wasn't all that attracted to him. Sure, he was hot and everything, but I just saw him as my best friend. Now, in the wake of summer, I definitely had feelings for him.

"With you saying those words, I know we'll get there eventually," Luke winked. I beamed like an idiot at him, and turned back around in my seat before I really started looking retarded.

"Ay! Beach up ahead!" Beau yelled from the driver's side. I squinted at the dusty windshield, before finally making out the vibrant green sign that read, "Diamond Beach- 3 Miles". Diamond Beach really didn't have actual diamonds encrusted somewhere. Way back when, some people had called it that because of the glinting, pretty sand layed about. I thought the name fit nicely.

"Beach! Beach Beach!" we begin chanting as Beau books it to the beach area. He hastily slides to a stop at the side, making sure we're in safe distance from the highway road. "We are here, ladies and gentlemen!" Beau said triumphantly.

"Thank God," I mutter, and climb out of the Honda. I swing my tote over my shoulder and slide my feet back into my flip-flops.

"The weather is beautiful here," Violet says to me. Her honey-gold hair, streaked with a lovely mixof  browns-similar to mine- whips around her head like a goddess. I nod, enjoying the refreshing burst of cool air that washes over my skin

"Sure is," I say, smiling. I nudge Violet. "So, you ready to show off that bikini?"

Violet blushes. "I guess so." She plays fidgitively with the sleeves of her off-the-shoulder sweatshirt. "Jenna?"

"Yeah?"

"I..I think..." Something clouds her gaze. "Never mind. It's nothing." There is a sense of urging in her voice, but I don't know what to think of it.
