Denise
"Have a good day at work, Ms. Greene." Jerry nods from the exit as I leave through the apartment building exit.
I beam back at him and wish him a good day too, with a bright smile that seems to lighten his whole mood, he nods his head with a fond smile in return and slowly returns back to his post.
No longer within the cool, shelter of my air-conditioned, apartment building I look up at the bright sky above us. I use my right hand to cover the top half of my eyes shielding them from the heat and glare of the hot summer sun above me. Fortunately for today, it's a wonderful summer day, with your typical endless blue sky and rare sightings of clouds in the sky.
I remove my hand and look down at my outfit for today, which I paired together keeping today's weather in mind. Today is Thursday so people in the office are allowed to come in looking a little more casual than at the start of the week-- but I may be pushing it a little.
As long as it's still business casual I can't get in trouble, right?
I chose to pair a sleeveless, pale yellow, button-down top (which I tucked in) with a long, white, and flowy skirt. Thankfully, I also opted for my yellow block-heeled sandals that tie around the calf of my leg, so waiting wasn't causing much strain on my feet. My skirt caresses my legs gently as I slightly sway myself, bored from standing on the sidewalk waiting for Denver to pick me up.
Not the first time you've waited around for and relied upon Denver to show up...
The troublesome thought enters my mind swiftly, halting my slight swaying as I recall the day I waited for Denver to come to the park, that rainy day, fourteen years ago...
I was wearing yellow then too.
This thought makes me slightly scoff with a bitter laugh at the irony.
A slow-growing feeling of regret takes hold of me as I ponder taking upon Denver's offer, not liking the dependence I've allowed myself to feel in his company when suddenly I hear the deep horn of a car. The crunching of stones and sidewalk underneath car tires alerts me of the vehicle currently coming to a stop in front of me and a brightly grinning Denver rolls down his front windows and leans over his center console to the passenger side where I stand straining a close-lipped smile at him.
"Excuse me, ma'am. Have you happened to chance upon a dear, close friend of mine, I'm picking her up for work today, though for the life of me I ain't seen her yet." He jests, with a horrible attempt at a southern gentleman drawl that makes me giggle, and momentarily forget any previous thoughts. He watches me laugh with a soft smile, all the while seeming to wait for me to answer back, which catches me off guard, though I choose to humor him all the same.
"Why no sir, I'm afraid I haven't seen anyone waiting for a funny stranger to drive by," I answer back with a dainty shrug of my naked shoulder, conjuring up the needed southern accent I'd perfected from years of going to a church dominated by the black community growing up.
"You sure? I'm certain you couldn't have missed her if you tried. She's short, got curly hair she recently started showing that between you and me I prefer on her, and has a tendency to shout at only those she hasn't seen in years." He teases and I stick out my tongue at him joining in his laughter. My cheeks subsequently burn from the compliment he gives my natural hair that I started showing when the week began.
I'd put off taking out my weave for so long, but that didn't mean I wasn't always thinking about it...
"Not to mention she's downright gorgeous-" He finishes, though he seems to have said this unconsciously as he freezes no longer softly laughing anymore. For a moment I too stop laughing after hearing his sweet compliment though I'm left softly laughing to myself when he starts to turn red with a horrified look on his face.
