Denver

It's dark...

I should be getting home now.

A bad sensation settles in my chest, causes me to lurch forward trying to clutch my heart through my clothes and skin.

The pain stops.

Only for a second before it becomes duller.

Bearable even.

I stand back up again, but I'm no longer outside by the hill.

Where am I?

Darkness everywhere I look, there's barely any light...

A sudden spotlight drops down from the ceiling. Two figures on the ground. One is male and the other is a... woman?

I walk closer, the dull ache in my heart makes me flinch with every step but I press on.

I walk and walk, but I'm getting no closer? With every step, it's like the illuminated couple moves further away from me.

"HELP!  HELP SOMEBODY PLEASE !" The male figure shouts looking around for help. Our eyes meet and it takes the breath out of me, freezing me in place.

Dad?

"Denver?" He calls out to me and I unfreeze. I smile because I'm no longer alone in this dark building.

Dad's here, I'm no longer alone.

I take off towards him, but my legs feel weighed down like someone's tied bricks to them.

"I'm coming Dad! Just wait I'm coming!" I scream but it's like he no longer hears me. He's too busy cradling the woman in his arms.

I get closer slowly despite how fast I try to run.

Dad's hugging the woman now, I can hear him shouting but it's muffled like there's an upcoming wall between us. The woman comes into focus a bit more. Her blonde hair is sprawled over her face covering it like a curtain. I also notice it's severely matted, some areas seem darker than the rest too. Her pretty pink dress is also spattered in dark splotches while one half of her body lays in Dad's arms, the other on the ground... Both unmoving.

Dad looks up again, but it's not me he faces.

A tall, black shadow moves across the field of view right in front of my Dad.

He looks up at it with a fearful expression before meeting my eyes briefly. His arms squeeze the woman tighter to him bringing her head closer towards him as the figure steps menacingly forward towards him again.

"DAD!" I scream in frustration. Why is it taking me so long to reach them?

At that moment the figure raises his left arm higher until it's pointing straight at my father. Dad looks up with tears in his eyes shaking his head, he looks like he's pleading with him for something, but I can't hear him.

Just as it finally seems like I'm going to reach them,

A deafening "BANG" goes off shaking the room turbulently and causing me to fall to the ground.

I look up just in time to see my father.

A fresh hole in the middle of his forehead. Blood gushes from his opened skull down his face in a stream following the two sides of the bridge of his nose and dripping down his face like blood-red tears.
