Kal felt as though he were floating through space. His head was light and his body was numb. A sick darkness filled his mind. Then sensation stabbed him in the arms and legs. The tingling began and suddenly he knew that someone had touched his neck. A warm feeling filled his body, which told of the hypospray administering medication.
"Furless?" A voice said, and he felt a hand touching his arm.
Then his mother's voice came to him, "Kalvin, come on. Wake up."
That warmth from the medicine quickly did the job, and his body felt heavier. The tingling turned into pricking needles on his skin. He could move his fingers, then budge an arm, then a leg, and finally, he could force his eyes open. It was like waking from the deepest sleep he had ever been in. Two blurry people stood over him, a third bent and pressed another hypo into his arm. The friendly nurse said, "There you go, Captain Henderson. That should help." She left and his slow return to the living gained speed.
"Kalvin, how do you feel?" His mother asked.
He finally regained his sight and looked up at her and Ashi. "I feel horrible, but alive."
"We were a little worried. You had the air forced out of your lungs and caused sudden hypoxia, you also ruptured a sinus. But, the doctors took care of you, you'll be fine."
The reality of what happened just before he blacked out struck him. "Sakura!" He tried to sit up but found it wasn't easy.
Ashi said, "My sister is fine. She had similar injuries from the decompression, but these holograms could repair the damage. She's already up."
Bonita said, "They had to help her first since she had her claws still stuck in Tojann's arm. She broke through an artery in his arm and tore muscles and a tendon in him. That was some grip she had on him."
Kal laid back and held his face, the surgery on his sinuses now causing pain. "She had to hold on to him tightly or he would have been thrown into space with the laboratory."
Dr. Selar came over just then and scanned Kal. "How are you feeling, Captain?"
"Better, but my head hurts."
She checked his head. "Nothing to concern yourself over." She picked up a small device and attached it to his forehead. "That should take care of the pain."
"How are the others?"
"Sakura is fine and Tojann is still in recovery. The surgery on his arm was extensive."
"Good. Here, help me up." Kal sat up with the aid of Ashi and then rested a moment on the side of the bed. "Report?"
Bonita answered, "Commander Shepard filled me in on what happened in that laboratory. The engineers have checked all the computers. The drone did not gain access to any of the systems. That girl of yours, Kalvin, she was brilliant. It took our best an hour to get through some of her firewalls. We will still need her help to get the others taken down. It's no surprise that the drone didn't get through quick enough."
"She's incredible. But if I hadn't used the emergency ejection system in that laboratory, he would have gotten through."
"What was that?" Ashi asked.
"It's a system we have to protect the station. If we ever have an experiment get out of control and there isn't any way to contain it, we use emergency eject. We can blow the whole lab into space and detonate it if necessary." Kal paused and looked at his mother. "Did you say it's been an hour?"
"Actually, it's been about an hour and a half."
Kal jumped down from the bed and had to stabilize himself. "We only have eighteen and a half hours before that Founder can make use of the trans-warp conduit."
