Piper's POV
I sat in my 6th hour class silently. Mack hadn't messed with me for the past two days. It was so odd. But at the same time I hadn't messed with her in the past two days either. We even had track practice and she just, laid off me. Usually she's doing anything she can to put me on edge, but she just was minding her own business.
I looked to my left to see Mack. She was making those pointy sticky note things and getting them stuck in the ceiling. She flung one more up before getting yelled at.
"Adler! C'mon kiddo we talked about this!" Mr. Grogsby, our science teacher, said.
"Sorry, Mr. Grogsby. I'll come after school to help get them out." She offered.
Mr. Grogsby nodded his head and continued the lesson.
I looked over to Mack again and saw her writing something down. Probably some notes. She was actually really smart. When she wanted to be. But other times it seemed like she had the brain capacity of a walnut. She had no common sense sometimes.
My thoughts were interrupted in seconds. "Piper. Piper. Piper!"
I turned my attention towards the front. "S-sorry, I kinda zoned out for a second. Heh, whoops."
That was weird. Mack didn't make any comment or say anything to me. Whenever I get called out she usually gives me a look of mouths some stupid remark to me. She just stayed silent.
Carson tapped my shoulder from behind me. "Dude, Mack is being really weird. Don't you agree?"
I turned in my chair a little so she could hear me. "Yeah, totally. She hasn't been messing with me."
"Why? Did something happen to you two?" She gave an audible gasp. "Oh my god did you two finally hookup?"
I turned red and gave her an offensive look. "Ew no! Why would you think that?"
She shrugged. "I don't know, I kind of ship you two."
I scrunched my nose. "Are you crazy? Psychotic? Did you hit you head again?"
Carson rolled her eyes and punched my arm. "No, dumby. You two are cute and gay-"
"I am pan. There's a difference." I added.
She continued. "You're definitely gay. Anyway, y'know, I think you two would be cute."
"Listen, even if we were friends, it would be forbidden. Sure, she's not bad-lookin' but she is my families enemy. Nothing will ever happen between her and I." I stated.
Carson sighed and gave me a, 'just wait' look.
I turned my attention back to the front and checked the time. It was almost time for seventh period. I packed my notes and waited for the bell to ring.
Ring.
Speak of the devil. I walked out to my locker and grabbed everything I needed. I heard my phone start ringing and noticed my mom was calling. I answered and started with;
"Hello?"
"Hey, sweetie!" She responded.
"What's up?"
"Sooo your dad and I invited some people over today. I was wondering if you could leave the house tonight. Maybe at like, 4?"
"Oh, uh, sure. I'll see if Carson can hang out."
"Ok, great. Thanks so much, honey! When is your next practice?"
"Ummm...Thursday. The day before our lacrosse game. But we have tomorrow off so maybe I can get some practice in at school tonight too."
"Okay! Have a great day!"
"Thanks, mom, you too."
I placed my phone in my pocket and walked to class. I entered the room and sat down in the last available seat next to Mia.
"Hey, Piper." She snickered.
"Ah, so while Mack is off the job, it's your turn." I sighed.
Mia looked down at her desk. "Sorry. I'm just used to it."
I nodded. "Do you know why Mack hasn't been messing with me?"
She shook her head. "No. Personally I don't want to be mean to you-"
"Then don't." I murmured.
She cleared her throat. "Anyway. I don't want to be mean to you, because you actually seem like an awesome person to be around. You know, it's just that Mack and you aren't on good terms. So, I'm just used to pretending to not like you."
"Oh. Yeah I understand. Carson says the same thing about Mack." I mentioned.
Mia sighed and clicked her pen a few times before speaking again. "It kind of sucks. What happened between your families. But do you think it's still...worth it? I mean, what, 31 years later?"
My eyes widened and I let out a huff. "31 years....you're right. I didn't think it was worth it even after 1. But to have so much hatred over a freak accident....31 years."
Mia seemed to notice the hurt in my eyes so she didn't talk anymore. I carried on with class, keeping the fact that it had been 31 years engraved in my mind.
The bell rang and I packed my bag. Mack walked into Mr. Grogsby's class to retrieve her sticky notes of death from the ceiling.
I got to my car and drove home. I texted Carson asking if she wanted to go to the school gym to play some basketball.
As I headed into my room, I noticed a note on my door; "maybe be out of the house by 3:45?"
I ripped it off my door and threw it away. 30 minutes is all I had to get ready to leave. I grabbed my basketball bag and threw in a tank top and some gym shorts. I also threw in a change of clothes in case I ended up staying at Carson's place.
I changed into an American Eagle shirt, my letterman jacket and a pair of jeans.
Carson: I can come to the school for a little. Maybe an hour and a half. 5:00?
Piper: Sure. See you then.
I headed off to the school. I decided I'd just stay and study for the time being. Maybe do some homework.
Upon my arrival, I noticed Macks car present in the lot. I walked into the building and sat by the gym doors.
I unpacked my homework and started it. Now I just had to wait until 5:00.
