I woke the next morning, my eyelids feelings like bricks.
Despite what happened yesterday, last night's sleep was the best I'd had in a long time. I lifted myself up and walked into the little orange kitchen where I pressed the kettle to boil.
While it did so, i stood looking out of the window for what felt like forever. Through it I could clearly see the barnyard, and instantly, memories started to come back to me.

His name was Liam. Liam Gallagher.

Mancunian

Twenty seven-ish years old.

Childhood acquaintance?

I was around fourteen-ish when we moved into this house. I loved that barnyard the first few years that we were here. As an only child I would live my days out there, and even have sleepovers by myself (as you can guess the country lifestyle didnt often bring around many friends).
And then one day, I met Sophie. She used to cycle through the lanes delivering papers most mornings. It was just a chance that she was my age and an actual girl! We hit it off and soon after, we were hanging out together and having sleepovers in the barn.

One summer's night, we were laying outside on the crisp dry grass, looking up at the setting sun. With us we had some apple juice (oh how innocent those drinking days were as a kid compared to now) and crisps. We lay there chatting about what we wanted to be when we grew up, how many children we wanted and who we fancied at school (of course). We would giggle for hours and hours until we got too tired, which rarely happened.

I remember on one particular day, the sun was near set and all of a sudden we see two figures walking towards us out of the sun - almost alien like. There walks were lanky and masculine while their hands were flailing in the air as if they were arguing about something.

Sophie and I dare move. We were terrified in case they were some farmers who had come to ask us to leave the land.
The figures were moving faster now and it was clearer that they were two teenage boys, maybe sixteen (and a little rough looking). They stopped at our feet and knelt down.

"Oh God. Here we go" Sophie muttered.
"Well, well, well" he gawked at me.
(My present self shivered at these words).
"And who have we got here?" The other one asked"

Unbeknownst to me then, the one gawking at me was in fact Liam. His face was quiet oily from the heat, his eyes electric blue. I hate to admit it, but I felt something for him the first time we locked eyes. He on the other hand stared at me as if he was ready to kill. His facial bone structure was magnificent and when he spoke, his accent was like one I'd never heard before.

I remember being so scared that I was unable to speak. Sophie took the reigns.
"I'm sorry, we were just leaving" she muttered as she started to gather our stuff. I accompanied her in doing this.

"Hold up now" Liam grazed my arm with his hand softly.
"So you're the ones who have been staying in the barn?" He is looking slightly more cocky now.
Sophie nods, and I am still unable to make any facial expression whatsoever.
"No more sleepovers, girlies! Ok!" He half shouts. I nearly cry.
Who is this guy, and how did he have such an effect on me? I will still never know.

"Come on, Ellie, we are leaving" Sophie tried to talk in an authorative way as usual, but the boys were having none of it.
As we got up and tried to walk away, they followed us back, walked into our paths deliberately and jeered us back to the house. It was clear they were just bullies.
When we got back to my house, Liam and the other lad started to walk away, laughing and high-fiving each other.

As soon as we were in the house, I turned to Sophie.
"Do you know them?" I whispered. Mum and Dad were asleep upstairs.
"Yeah. Liam and Mark. Just some stupid bullies who think they own the land" she wound her eyes.
"They could have fooled me" I muttered, still clearly shaken from the whole thing.
"Just stay away from them. Dont cross their paths and you will be fine, ok?"
I nodded. We both went up to my room after and Sophie fell asleep instantly.
'Dont cross their paths' I repeated to myself.
In a small village like this, wasn't that going to be impossible?
I shivered.
I didnt know about Mark, but Liam was bad news. I could just tell. And even worse was the horrible fact that if 'cross' him again, I might not make it out alive.

KNOCK KNOCK!
Just then I am brought back to reality by a knocking at the door. I walk over to see Sophie looking through the large peep hole. She is clearly struggling with holding my bags, so I make quick work of opening the door. Even though I had only said goodbye to her in the city yesterday morning, it felt like forever since we last hugged.
She dropped all of the bags (I swear I hear something smash in one of them) and hugs me so tight that i start to lose consciousness.
"Hello stranger" she cries.
Liam saying those very words to me yesterday slaps me hard in the chest, and suddenly I realise that moving back here isnt going to be easy at all.
Great
