I gasped in horror. I had a proper look at Rajat this time and sure enough, that proved that I wasn't schizophrenic and also that I was not hallucinating out of love.
But just to confirm, I asked, "Is this a dream? Because it is not a good one. Just pinch me."
Gauri sighed with irritation and was about to snap but Rajat said, "I won't pinch you."
He took a few steps towards me and kissed my cheek for 2 seconds. When he pulled back, he asked, "Now are you convinced that I am actually standing in front of you, so that I can make you mine?"
What about Meera? That was the first thing that popped in my mind. He was supposed to get married that evening. When I checked the time on the clock, it read 8:45 pm.
I turned to face Gauri and commanded, "Gauri. Leave us alone."
She shrugged and went inside her bedroom. I knew she would peep from the room to see and hear what we were talking, but I wanted Rajat to be open in front of me.
So I crossed my arms on my chest and asked, "What the hell are you doing here?"
Rajat sighed and said, "I can explain. When you..."
But I cut in between, "Shouldn't you be getting married now? If you have come this far to apologize, I swear to God, I will kick you out of this house!"
Rajat snapped, "Can you for once listen to what I have to say?"
I turned my face to see the dark sky out of the window and said mercilessly, "Go ahead."
Rajat sighed again and explained, "After you screamed and left that hotel room yesterday, I realized that I had hurt you so bad and I didn't want to end things with you like that. I called you and texted you but you didn't answer. That's when I realized that I had taken you for granted and I never treated you the way you deserved to be. Last night, I had a constant fear of losing you. It had been there earlier as well. But yesterday, it was different. I was not prepared to get married to a girl I didn't like lately. I wanted to get married to you."
I snapped my head to face him and saw that his eyes were a little moist. I wanted to say something, but he continued, "You know what Nikhil? I realized how much you meant to me after you left me. I never wanted to accept my feelings for you because I was scared. But last night, after a lot of thought, I realized that I was happier around you than anybody else. When you were around me, I felt like I could be myself and I need not hide anything from you because I knew you were always there for me no matter what. After we fought, I felt lonely and anxious and so many other things. I missed you so much in the last 24 hours."
He kept his hands on my shoulders and said, "Nikhil. You have changed my life. My life changed after you entered it. But it changed for the better. I took time to understand such a simple fact because I was scared that I hadn't known my sexuality all these years. You came at the right time. You saved me from getting married to someone I didn't love. You..."
THUD!
We both turned our heads to see where the noise came from. It was from the bedroom. Gauri was on the floor and she was cussing continuously. She looked at our direction and squealed, "You guys carry on. I'm really sorry to interuppt. Ouch!"
I grunted angrily because I knew she was listening to us and ended up doing a stunt in the end. Probably she was standing in a weird position and her clumsy self caused her to fall. Gauri broke the flow.
Rajat held my shoulders tightly and said, "Nikhil. I realized that I had abandoned you. That's why, I left my wedding alter to come for you."
My eyes widened with shock and screamed, "What the fuck! You ran away from your own wedding?"
