************************************The men around the fire were rough, weathered, and tempered by battle and bloodshed. All bore scars from their endeavors, and a darkness lingered in their eyes. It was not a darkness that eats a soul, but one that cohabits that soul. I had never seen the like, aside from the few times I had seen my own reflection.
The chatter was friendly, the laughter boisterous and real. If it weren't for Mathias sitting beside me, staring at my face, I might have felt the same peace.
"You have questions," he purred, shifting so that he was facing me completely, blocking the ears and eyes of the other men.
"Many... I don't know where to start exactly. Where are we, who are these people? How did I get here? Also... who the fuck are you and Sinn really?" It was about time that someone gave me answers, before crazy Thea came out and took up residence.
"This is a temporary settlement for myself and my closest advisors, you already know how you got here, and despite your foul language I may still share that story with you. Another time." With that, Mathias turned back to the fire and his men.
My blood was boiling. What was expected of me? Song and dance? Undeserved loyalty? Mathias could sense my turmoil, that was for sure. Smirking bastard.
We can kill them, if it pleases you, the dark wolf whispered.
Tempting, but not realistic.
"Are you actually incapable of answering my questions, or are you just an asshole?"
Mathias pivoted towards me at a speed I could barely comprehend, eyes glowing like the embers of the fire. Slightly scary, definitely sexy.
"I am a King, and although I have offered you shelter and solitude from the whiny brat you've grown fond of, you still seek to insult me?" The sane part of me shivered at his raw power, urging me to tuck tail and apologize. But hell, at this point my life was already fucked, so what was there to lose?
"Yes." Mathias flinched, looking at me like I was a madwoman. Couldn't blame him. "You may be a King, of wherever the hell you're a King of, but you're not MY King. Also, I'm pretty positive you lured me here somehow, and I've had enough of this dancing around the answers bullshit. Either tell me what the fuck is going on, and how we all fit into it, or I'm leaving. I don't give two titties that you're helping me, I never asked it from any of you."
The night had grown quiet, and it took a few moments of settling rage to realize that all eyes were on me. Mathias's men were either smiling or shocked. The man to the Kings left, who was called Bjorn, clapped him on the shoulder as his head fell back, deep in laughter.
"You've got a tough one there, my King. I think it's time for us men to call it a night, what do you say lads?" The others nodded, most ducking quickly into their tents at the look on Bjorn's face. Bjorn nodded at me politely before excusing himself as well.
Mathias sat stiffly, facing the fire. The light danced across his skin, his eyes, his chiseled jaw. Realizing that I was ogling him, I turned towards the heat as well.
"Sinn and I grew up in the Castle were he resides, with our parents... and older brother," Mathias started, hesitantly. I could tell this was a story that not many, if any, had been told.
"I thought it was just you and Si-" His glare cut me short, and he waited until I had zipped it locked it, and thrown away the key before continuing.
