Plumes of smoke rise from the chimneys of the small village, curling like desperate fingers as they grasp at the sky. My breath fans out before me, as does the breath of my companions. I can feel their longing like it belongs to me, maybe it does. Longing for flesh, for the kill. Longing for the moment before the end, when the ever fearsome predator realizes that they are the pray. Even now, as we stand shielded by the dense woods, they can feel us. They walk quickly, eyes darting every which way, driven by an unknown force to stay inside, to lock the doors. Pity, locking the doors won't keep us out. We are the hunters of the night, born to kill and destroy, to take joy in the sacrifice of our prey.
"Alpha, we await your command," Beta Grey growls, head bowed in respect.
My father was a man who loved humans, who believed that they were worth saving, worth protecting. He believed in man even as they burned him alive, his cries ones of betrayal, not pain. My father felt no pain. Soft for humans, maybe, but never soft. I remember.
I linger for another moment, watching as a toddler runs through the snow powdering the busy streets, laughing gleefully. Not a care in the world.
"Kill them all, leave none alive." Grey nods, but I can tell that this command is difficult for him. Good, better to toughen him now before the real time comes. The time for war, where only the strong prevail. "And Grey," his eyes lift to mine, respect and resentment at war, "you kill the boy."
Resentment wins.
"Yes, Alpha Mathias."
