"Russell, we need to start soon. Will you be ready?" The gruff voice of my boss spoke from the doorway.
Not looking at him I continued staring at my screen.
"Yes, five minutes," I replied.
"Good."
I knew my job and what I was expected to accomplish. It was irritating for them to constantly doubt me and my abilities. They just didn't understand how it worked and their fear of failure kept them all constantly second guessing everything.
My leaves brushed across the keys rapidly, the tap-tapping was music to my ears. I fell back into my zone, the melody syncing my thoughts. Before I knew it, it was time to go to the meet and present what I had done.
The team was gathered, chatting quietly as I joined them. All conversations ceased as all eyes fell on me. Moisture gathered beneath my leaves due to my nervous energy, anxious to get to the point so I could finally set the plan in motion. Once I was sure everyone was present and listening I began to speak.
"So, we want them to remember us, to see how important we really are. Correct?" I asked rhetorically but still receiving answers of agreement.
"I have devised a plan to infiltrate their systems. Once inside we will disperse our message into their thoughts, their dreams, every aspect of their lives. As it spreads, they will come to realize just how special we are."
Murmurs of excitement wove in and out of the small crowd.
"And how will you do this?" My body asked, prodding for further explanation for those unaware of the passed discussions.
"Subliminal messages." I answered simply. "I've devised a code that I will release into the internet and it will spread like wildfire."
"And this will have a positive outcome? You're sure?" Cabba, the vice president asked.
"Yes."
"How soon can we do this?"
"I can begin immediately. I just need to get to the office."
"A team will be waiting for you. Gather what you need and meet at the ledge."
A few hours later, my stem was in agony from the distance I had to travel but I had finally made it. No time to waste. I quickly let myself into the system of the store and entered my code, sending it out into the internet like a piece of candy for a baby. Once finished all we could do was wait.
A few weeks later....
We were gods. The humans had taken my message and ran with it. Soon we had become bigger than Facebook and TicTok combined. The world loved us, saw us as the ultimate vegetable, easily surpassing kale. So treasured it became illegal to eat us, worldwide, the only things everyone on earth had ever agreed upon. Shrines built to preserve us, merchandise and furniture made is recognition of us. My code had worked bigger and better than I had imagined.
That was until... spinach decided to start a war with us.
