There was something about her that I couldn't seem to get enough of. Everything about her drew me in, calling to me as if destiny herself had put us together. The way the sun shone in her hair, the crinkle of her eyes when she smiled... those were were only some of the things I found to be so beautiful.
I wanted her to finally meet my mother. After months of growing closer I felt it was time for us to take the next step but I knew she wasn't as confident. She was insecure about her inability to hear, worried my mother would disapprove. But that wasn't who she was.
Adrian was the love of my life. Having met online, we had begun our relationship through text messages. It wasn't until we had agreed to meet that I had developed concerns. I didn't know sign language. But that didn't stop us.
We wrote letters and passed notes like we were kids. Text messages quickly became our easiest for of communication. I worried that she would grow tired of me but eight months later she was still with me. My feelings for her had only grown stronger when I realized she didn't hold it against me yet the guilt gnawed at me every night as I drifted off to sleep.
Me: I'm picking you up at 7.
Adrian rolled her eyes next to me as she read my message. Shaking her head, she quickly typed her response.
Adrian: Are you sure about this?
Me: Yes, absolutely. Don't worry. My mother is going to love you.
I pulled her into me and kissed her temple giving her a reassuring squeeze. She gave me a small smile in return but I could tell she still wasn't thrilled about my making plans despite her obvious unease.
A few hours later, we pulled up in front of my childhood home. It had been months since I had last been here but the medium sized brick home still looked the same. I smiled to myself as I spotted my mother peeking from the living room window.
I held Adrian's hand as we enter the house and my mother greeted us both with tight hugs and a warm smile. Adrian visibly relaxed when my mother was immediately taken with her. After a while I led her to the back garden and stood in front of her. I took a deep breath and slowly began to move my hands, forming them in ways I had practiced many times. Her eyes widened and filled with tears as she nodded.
I grinned, pulling her into my arms and spinning her around in a circle.
My phone buzzed with a new message and I reluctantly pulled away and saw that my mother had opened a group message with us.
Mom: What just happened?!
Me: I asked her to marry me.
I had secretly been learning just for her.
