Fight or Flight

Does anyone ever really think about where they will be when the world comes to an end? Okay maybe not the end exactly, but as close as it would probably get without exploding or something. I know I never considered the fact that I would be stuck on a plane with who knows how many other people, strangers I didn't even know the names of, while everything outside turned into a real life Hollywood zombie movie.

Let me tell you, its just as gross and bloody if not more so. My seat mate was glued to her phone, trying to reach her family but all of the phone service was suddenly jammed or disconnected. Other passengers were watching what news coverage they could find. Funny how in the midst of a major crisis the phones didn't work but the internet still did. I shook my head as I watched the people around me panicking. The captain had informed us over an hour ago that we would remain on the plane until they received word that it was safe to disembark.

I was almost envious of them. They had people out there possibly waiting on them or looking for them, people that cared for them. I didn't have anyone waiting or searching. My parents had both died in a car accident several years ago and I had no siblings. Most people found me to be rude and inconsiderate but really I was just blunt and didn't see the need to sugarcoat the truth. That was something that the majority of people had a problem with. But if you don't have anyone to worry about or that would worry about you, it would make the zombie apocalypse a little easier.

Sighing, I looked out of the window and realized I could see through the windows of the airport. As I watched, I saw people running in all directions, scattering like mice running from a cat. I squinted my eyes and what I saw had me covering my mouth. There were individuals behaving erratically, chasing other people with their faces contorted and mouths open as if screaming.

One man was tackled to the ground by a young woman. She seemed to have inhuman strength as she wrestled him on the ground, ripping his shirt as she tried to lunge towards his neck. Moments later, she got her way and his once white shirt turned red as it pooled beneath him. His body went limp as his skin grew paler by the second. The woman leapt to her feet and took off after another terrified person.

This was really happening. The books and movies had predicted it and we all took it for granted as entertainment. Now here I was, sitting on an airplane full of strangers and watching as people on the outside were mauled to death by others as wild and rabid as an animal.
