Confession

My hands were shaking as I sat in the corner booth of the diner, my nerves twisting my stomach into knots. My heart was pounding so loud in my ears that the rest of the world seems like muted background noise. I closed my eyes and drew a deep breath in through my nose and slowly exhaled from my mouth, trying to calm myself. I repeated the process several times before my heart slowed to a more normal pace but still faster than I wanted.

I bit my lip and looked out of the window beside me, watching the faces of each person as they wondered by. He had told me he would be here but i couldn't help but almost hope he wouldn't. I needed to do this but I was also afraid. What if it changed everything? What if I lost him completely, forever?

I shook my head to clear my thoughts. I reminded myself that it didn't matter. I needed to tell him. He would either feel the same or he wouldn't, but I had to do it. I couldn't continue living my life, waiting for something that may never happen. I was finally solid in my career and I had more than earned the right to happiness. I could only hope that it would be with him.

The bell over the diner entrance jingled and my head snapped up in its direction. As I sat frozen, I watched as he looked around searching the tables until his gaze fell on the booth I was at. His face lit up and a wide smile graced his lips as he wove his way towards me until he was finally in front of me.

His messy blonde locks fell across his bright hazel eyes as he sat, and I fought the urge to brush them back.

"I missed you, Max. I hope you had a good trip." I said, referring to his recent business trip.

"The resort was gorgeous," he replied with a nod. "You should have been there."

I could only manage a small smile as I gathered my courage. I needed to do this.

"So, what did you want to talk about, Layla?" Max ask me uncertainly, picking up on my distress.

I took a deep breath and jumped in head first.

"I'm in love with you, Max. I have been for years. Your my best friend and I don't want to lose you but I had to tell you."

His face paled and his eyes held a mix of what I thought was desire and pain but I wasn't sure. Before he could reply a woman walked up to him and gave him a kiss on the lips before turning to me. She had blonde hair, blue eyes, curves in all the right places and legs for days. The opposite of me.

"Hello, I'm Sarah, Max's fiance. Who are you?" She asked with a genuinely sweet smile.

Tears filled my eyes as I stood.

"No one."
