Shawn drove me to the restaurant where I was going to meet my dad and the others. I was having intense anxiety over this. Everything changed the moment my dad chose that woman over us.
To think the whole reason our family was moved up here was so he could be closer to her. But then again, if we hadn't moved, I wouldn't have met Shawn.
When we arrived at the restaurant, I spotted everyone by the door. The place didn't look super busy, surprising since it was lunch time in L.A. in the middle of July.
Shawn pulled over to the curb and stopped the car. He turned and gave me a soft kiss and smiled.
"Remember, you're going to be great. And if you really want to leave, Teddy will be here in minutes."
"Thank you Shawn. I love you."
"I love you too."
With a shaky breath, I got out of the car. I turned around and waved as Shawn drove away. My dad noticed me and started walking over. It took every fiber in my body not to run in the opposite direction.
"Lily! I am so glad to see you sweetie!"
"You too dad." I plastered a smile on my face and went with him towards the restaurant.
Faye and her mom, Sarah, had on smiles that were more fake than plastic surgery. I had to hold back a snarky comment.
"Sarah and Faye," my dad motioned to me. "I know you three are already acquainted, but this is my oldest daughter, Lily."
"Good to see you again." Faye smirked.
Can't say the same.
"Ditto." I replied.
My dad rubbed his hands together, "Our table should be ready. I already checked us in and everything."
The four of us walked inside together and over to the hostess. My dad gave her his name and she nodded. "Macy here will take you to your seats."
We followed the red haired lady over to a secluded booth in the corner of the restaurant. After handing us with menus, she nodded and walked away.
"This is a cute little place." Sarah remarked.
"Yes, I used to come here a lot." My dad answered.
"What is your favorite thing to order here Lily?"
Why was she so interested in what I had to say?
"It varies from moment to moment. Evidently just like my father's taste in women." I was going to regret that later.
My dad gave me a 'behave or else' expression. I held back a laugh as she looked back and forth a few times between me and my dad.
"You know," Faye spoke up. "I don't understand why you hate us so much."
Is she serious right now? I have to keep my cool right now.
"Oh, I don't hate you. I feel sorry for you-"
The waiter came at that moment and I wasn't able to finish my sentence. We ordered and the table got silent for a while after he left to fill our order.
Sarah was the first one to speak up, and it was another question directed at me. "Lily, when is your due date?"
"August 23rd." I replied.
"Ah, so you have about a month and a half left. What are your plans for postpartum recovery?"
I'm pretty sure I knew where this was going. But I'll give her the benefit of the doubt this time. "What do you mean?"
"Oh you know, getting your body back in shape."
Yep, just as I had originally suspected. She can't go a second without criticizing someone.
"You mean cause I'll look 'fat' for a while?"
"Yes honey. You have to get rid of that tummy fat as quick as possible so you can bounce back after delivery. Otherwise you may have trouble keeping your man away from other women."
"Hey ladies, let's talk about better things than weight." My dad interjected into the conversation.
I swear this woman was begging me to stab her with this steak knife next to my plate. "Shawn would never leave me because of the way I looked."
"Well, no self respecting daughter, or stepdaughter, of mine will be larger than a size 5 waist. It just isn't proper. I have a reputation to uphold."
And that's when I snapped.
"Okay, that's it. You always do this, even when I was best friends with your daughter." I stood up and threw my napkin on the table. "I just want to let you know, Sarah, that you are a horrible person and I hate you."
My dad glared at me, "Lily! Sit down this instant and apologize to her!"
"No, she deserves that! No one has the right to criticize someone based on how they look. If she shaved her head, I wouldn't think differently of her. If she had more implants, I wouldn't think differently of her. If she gained a ton of weight, I wouldn't think differently of her."
"Forrest, it's fine." Sarah smiled at him and patted his arm.
"I'm leaving. Don't try to contact me until it's your turn to take me and Bailey for the week."
And with that, I marched out of the restaurant and called Teddy to pick me up. He said he'd be here in a few minutes.
When he arrived I jumped into the car and we drove back to the arena.
"Are you okay?"
I put my head in my hands, "No I'm not. I don't understand why Faye's mom has to be so judgmental 24/7!! Everything was going half decently until she opened her mouth."
"I'm so sorry Lil. I know she can be a bear to be around sometimes."
"Thanks Teddy."
My phone started to ring and Bailey's name appeared.
"Hey sis! What's up?"
"Mom had Jack over for dinner last night and he's even hotter in person!!"
"Who's Jack?"
"Her new boyfriend. He's the person she was talking to on Tinder."
"Ah I see. Can't wait to meet him. He better treat her right."
"I'm sure he will. Okay, well that's all I wanted to say. I'll call you later, bye!"
"Bye Bay." No matter what was going on in my life, she could always bring a smile to my face.
We arrived back at the arena and there was already a relatively long line of fans waiting for check-in to start. We snuck around them and ran to the safety of backstage.
Shawn was in the middle of soundcheck. I was still fuming about what Sarah had said earlier. I just needed to get through the rest of this day, then I can have a few moments alone with my thoughts.
I sat down in the front row and he gave me a surprised and worried expression. I signaled that we could talk about it later and he nodded. Someone's gonna have to help me get through the next 10 hours.
